Really sorry to hear this. We know exactly how you feel, ours was stolen from storage end of October last year. It took over 3 months before our insurance settled but it probably depends on which insurance company you have and also the circumstances. Ours had actually been "found" before we knew it was stolen as it had been involved in a collision. We didn't find out until we had a letter( almost 2 months later) from the recovery company demanding payment for the recovery and storage of our caravan plus the (stolen) vehicle which was towing it at the time of the accident. The caravan had been rolled down a steep enbankment on the M62 and was completely wrecked. We had a few sleepless nights when it happened and we were furious!! We now have a new caravan and are trying to put it behind us but it is difficult. Hope you are OK and things get sorted for you soon.
If people didnt buy stolen vans then there would not be a market for them. The scroates who nick them need sorting but the gits who buy them should be held responsible too.
------------- I'm not a complete idiot, Some parts are missing!
Totally agree postie but I think that a lot of stolen vans are bought by people who have no idea that they are stolen. In my experience a lot of people who are new to caravanning are totally ignorant to the CRIS scheme and wouldn't even think to check with them to see if a van was reported stolen. If they knowingly buy stolen vans they should be strung up by the b***s!!

I think you will find when a newish 'van is stolen it remains within the 'community' of the thieves, obviously if the police regularly checked serial numbers of caravans on 'unofficial' sites, most would be recovered but of course the police choose not to.
These 'vans will be sold off a few yrs later, thru ebay or Autotrader. Most people buying their first caravan have no knowledge of CRIS so they buy them & provided they dont try to register them with CRIS nobody is any the wiser.
I have to agree with boblyn and karim as a person looking for a second hand van I was not aware of CRIS untill I came across the info by chance on the internet. I think if you don't know any other caravan's and are new to it you can easly be taken for a ride as a sucker.

I posed that same question Karim a year or so ago and was answered by someone in the law enforcement (LOL), was told that this was considered a grey area, just what the heck is that supposed to mean. I dare say that less than 20% of the said community could produce a legal receipt for the purchase of the unit. Not wishing to start a debate but there is a law for us and a law for them
Well lets not head down that route and start the debate then. Keep this on track please as any info on finding the van would be gratefully received I am sure
