I've recently changed my car and I went to put the new plate on the van, unfortunately I cant get the old plate off.

The plate was glued on when I got the van.

Does anybody have any ideas on how to remove the plate without damaging the van.

Just screw or glue the new plate over the old one, that would save any damage.

Normally they are stuck on with those little white sticky pads. You could try some nail varnish remover. We use 5 vertical strips of that sticky backed velcro strip and then I can swap plates when I need to use my trailer.

They are normally just stuck on with sticky pads, be brave and pull a bit harder!!

I did say Nail Varnish Remover. This should desolve the glue on the sticky pads. [8D]

Yes but it may damage the plastic of the caravan as well. I'd just stick the new one on top if it won't come off with a good tug, or you could try warming it gently with a hairdrier or fan heater to soften the glue.

It's easy!
Find a sea angler, and ask for a length of his strong nylon fishing line.
If it's stuck on with sticky pads, as they usually are, then place the line behind one end of the numberplate. Holding it firmly in both hands (as the Bishop said to the actress), pull the line along from one end of the plate to the other using a sawing motion!
Should be done in no time.

when I changed my car last time, I forgot about the caravan plate, and spent about six or seven months towing a van with a out of date number plate on it, luckily no one spotted it, including me or the wife.

Get a thin bit of string behind it, try dental floss and work it up and down while pulling left/right.

Mine is stuck on the top of the one for my old car. It will pull off, bend the plate as it comes off so if something did break, the bulk of the stress is on that so the plate will break first. You could slide a hacksaw blade behind the plate and cut the sticky pads if it is really solid, but shouldn't be necessary unless someone has used silicone or something similar to hold it on.

stuck mine over the top with strips of double sided tape as use in car body repair trim.nothing will shift unless the old one falls off.

I've now got 3 number plates (one on top of the other) on the back of my van !!, all held on with number plate pads from Halfords. The plates take a fair old bit of pulling to get them off so if they're that hard to get off I don't think there's much chance of them falling off.

Even although there's 3 plates, you have to look closely to notice.
