How many ralliers are there out there?

It seems most people prefer EHU but we only tried it once and just ended up charging the battery off it lol

How many others prefer the simple life with no facilities?

(Please note, I'm not knocking those who like a well eqipped site in the slightest, each to their own I say  I'm just being nosey!)

Cheers

Chris :)

We like both types of sites, however usually always have EHU, just for convenience especially last year having a baby with us the microwave became essential for warming bottles quickly for my impatient little screamer! (Didn't want to wake all other campers)

I love the locations and seclusions of the quiet sites, especially CL's although I do like EHU.

We have done Big commercial sites on occasions and will do the odd one now and again in the future but for most holidays CL's / no facilities it is for us, The big we have been to have been great but generally double the price for us.

We rally on the C&CC holiday sites and weekend meets. All we need is a tap and somewhere to empty the loo. We do have a solar panel which keeps the battery topped up. The attraction is the cost and the company.  Usually about a fiver for the unit.

I second Pippa's quote, word for word!!!

I will admit that we like EHU early and late season and in winter, as it's easier to keep the 'vans warm and dry on electric, and it's nice to be able to have lights on without thinking about the battery.

So how effective do you find the Solar charger? Maplins seem to be doing some at the moment for what seems to be a good value, and I am considering getting a 40W one. I figure that this kind of level will pretty much keep up with running the TV / radio if with no drain on the battery, and the we can use any excess to top up during the course of the day for running pumps / lights / heating fan etc. Not sure if I am being over optimistic.

My parents are ralliers and I was brought up doing that with them.  Spending a weekend in a field with a tap and an elsan, with the same people you spent last weekend with in a different field with a tap and an elsan, didn't appeal to me much as I got older.  So now we have our own caravan we stick firmly to commercial sites - we don't go for the all singing all dancing type but we do require showers.  EHU is nice but not essential.  We tend to go further afield than my parents for your normal two-night weekend, but we do probably less than half the amount of weekends away that they do.

Vive la difference!

hi we use a solar panel all the time unless we go to a site where electricity is not optional then we use the ehu. our panel is a 40 watt one charging a 110 amp battery we havent had any problems with low / no power in the 3 years weve been using it . on good sunny days (we have had some) the charging controller turns off because the battery is full .we use the lights shower etc as you would on a ehu the only thing we dont use is a tv that stays at home .

We've done loads of rallys over the year's with CCC both holiday meet's and DA weekends I love em but have to say SWMBO likes hook up these days.

Having said that last four weekend's have been without hook up but I have just bought a new leisure battery and keep thinking about a solar panel.

We have one of those brief-case type solar panels.  It keeps the battery topped up OK - we only use the electric for lighting and water when we aren't on mains (TV is only used very occasionally when on mains).  Last summer we had 10 nights without mains on one 110 amp battery - the solar panel kept it topped up to the point that it would still power the motor mover for hitching up, despite it having rained solidly for 6 days!!
