I hope we have some caravan manufacturers and distributers looking, so...how come every car that you can buy comes with a full wheel change kit, wheel brace, jack and sometimes even a chock. I think this may be a legal requirement in the UK so why don't caravans have the same kit as standard?

Our caravan bought new 12 months ago came with spare wheel & jack, our friends have just bought a new 09 plate ford fiesta titanium & it came without a spare wheels (optional extra). Our company has a 58 plate BMW 320d pool car & again supplied without a spare.

A spare wheel is an advisory & not a legal requirement.

vauxhalls come with a tube of gunk instead of a spare tyre , we had a puncture , used the gunk as per the instructions and ended up putting about 20psi over the true pressure and hot footing it to quick fit . guess what after using it you cant have a punture mended , you have to have a new tyre. £55 tyre and £25 to replace the gunk cartridge rip off or what......now driving a KIa carens with a spare ....atb Bill

Hmmm, well I guess Im a bit out of date, I would feel cheated if I bought a brand new car without a spare and a changing kit, in fact I would insist that the dealer provides one or I'd walk away from the deal.

The latest model of Nissan X-Trail - one of the most popular tow cars - comes with a "spacesaver" spare which is not to be used while towing! Useless.

Cans of "gunk" won't repair a blow out.

No wonder specialist mobile tyre replacement rescue services are springing up.

If a BMW has not got a spare in the boot it means it has run flat tyres. You can drive upto 50mph and upto 50 miles with the tyre fully flat - enough to get you off the motorway to get it fixed!

I've got a BMW and had a flat and they do really work - the only way you know you have a flat is a light on the dash!

I guess it's because a car is a motor vehicle and a caravan a trailer!
Different legislation.

It seems to be the way of everything these days....cut corners, cut costs, reduce prices beyond the point that is sensible to give you everything that you need, then it is up to you if you want to pay the "extra" or not.

On the other hand, some people already have the kit they need, and don't want to pay for more, some people might not be physically capable of changing a wheel or may choose not to, and simply pay someone to come and fix it for them.

I can see both sides of this one, but I think that it is unfair for a manufacturer to exclude this kit simply to boost profit, then again would we want a price increase to keep it in if we don't want it??

Tricky one!!

alot of vehicles come with a spacesaver, some are usable, my multipla had a full diameter wheel, just thinner so was "OK", some have a different width and diameter, so pretty useless for towing.

some of the focuses could have a full size as an option, but sacrificed boot space.

alot of the 7 seaters only have a can `o` gunk, as the 3rd row of seats use the space for foot wells.

one of the selling points when i bought my 406 was the full size spare.

I think attitudes are different these days, while older folk might see changing a wheel beside the road as a routine job, clearly nowadays wheelchanging is not looked at as diy by many & coupled with the fact that modern tyres do not puncture as easily as tyres did 20 odd yrs ago. Manufacturers don't see the need to fit one.

THe AA/RAC must have changed their rules as well, yrs ago their small print stated that if you were'nt carrying a serviceable spare they would charge you for a wheel change.
