Hello everyone,

We have been caravanning for a year now and decided to take the plunge and buy a full awning. But, being unused to all things canvas related, we are struggling a bit on deciding what is the right size of awning and/or porch awning for our caravan.

Do the dimensions need to be a 100% match?

Our van is a 2008 Swift Charisma 540. From the handbook, it tells us:

Overall Height (inc. TV Aerial) - 2.70 metres

Awning A/A dimension - 9.81m

A lot of the awnings we've looked at are in the range 950-975 or 975-1000. Which one of these would be best for our van? If we bought one at 975cm does that mean it would not fit our van ie. 5cm too small?

The only ones we've seen that are exactly 9.80m are Apache awnings but they seem quite expensive (1k+). Would be grateful for any advice about Apache.

Also, what size of porch awning would we need, as the bit about the aerial is throwing us a bit?

Thank you,
Debbie

You should go for the size range that your van falls in to ie the 975-1000 if your van is 981. Not sure what you mean by the t v aeral as surely that is on top of your van and will not interfgere with the awning, for a porch it is the height of the awning rail from the ground.

I would strongly recommend an Isabella 975 for you if you are certain about your 981cm measurment for your caravan....this awning will fit perfectly on your van as the awning sides will be very slightly above the ground. We bought an Isabella 1025 for a 1033 caravan and it looks just right. Go for it...

We would love an Isabella, but budget doesn't stretch that far I'm afraid.

Dealer recommended Apache Kensington 980. Does anyone have any experience of this make?

Are there any cheaper awnings (£500ish) that would do the job? We have 2 children under 5 years old, and we plan to use a full awning about 4 times a year (summer and half terms so not in winter).

Have you thought about buying 2nd hand?

We have a Dorema full awning that we are very happy with, bought it 2nd hand through small ads in paper for £200 including groundsheet (steel poles). 3 years old. Clean and no damage.

Also bought an Appache porch awning on eBay, only used twice and in mint condition, curtains brand new, list is around £475, got it for £120.

Also most dealers and caravan shops sell 2nd hand that they have taken in trade-in.
