We've bought a bailey senator indiana from an insurance company, it was previoiusly stolen and recovered, the van is in mint conditon but the radio/cd had been stolen. I have purchased a replacement from Halfords with the hope that instalation would be easy given that the van was already wired. However, not the case, first the existing adapter fitted in the van is diferent to the radio/co, I removed the adapter to reveal just two wires "yellow" and "white" in addition to the speaker wires. The yellow is the permanant live, I think, but i've no idea what the white is and there is no black earth. Needless to say I can't get the damn thing to work. Any ideas?
If the radio was stolen and ripped out there is a strong chance that they have blown a fuse. If you dont have a meter why don't you get a 12v car bulb and touch the wires to it to see if the voltage is present?
If it doesn't light up you will have to look at the fuses in the distribution unit. They will probably be similar to the fuses in your car and should be marked up with "Radio" etc.Have a look and see if its blown and if so replace it. You can get a set of spares from Poundland as well as a set of car bulbs.
Yellow is normally positive (+)

you will need a multimeter, if you get the +ve and -ve the wrong way round, at the least ypou will blow the fuse on the stereo, the worst you will cook its internals.
on the stereo, you will either need to change the position of the fuse on the back of the unit, to connect 2 wires together, because for a car stereo there is a permanant live and a switched live, there should be a diagram in the instructions, or usually one on the unit as well.
the unit needs to see 12V on both these connections in order to power up.
Many thanks all. The white was indeed the earth and I had to combine the perm live (yellow) and the swith live (red) on the new stereo and connect them to the yellow on the van. Works fine now, just back from east coast after long weekend and van morrision sounded particularly good on stereo.
