Has anyone got one of these sat nav systems?  Are they any good, easy to use etc?  Do they do what it says on the tin, ie route you down suitable roads for caravans?  I have so far done without a sat nav, preferring maps, but may now be tempted after ending up in the centre of Le Havre with the caravan on the back, and not having a clue how to get back out again on the right road.  Managed to get out, (in one piece), but that was after some very quizical looks by the local police.

The Snooper one looks good, BUT at a price (£439).  I have heard the ProNav is a bit fiddly to navigate the screens, but is much cheaper.  Also thought about the ProCAB download for normal sat navs but that doesn't seem to cover Europe.

Very poor reviews online for ProNav - basically, reviewers (mostly truckers) claim it takes ages to calculate routes and then sometimes fails to take into account the size of the vehicle in the way it should. Also, it's not easy to use.

i bought the snooper ventura last week, used it this weekend very easy to use .when you start it up you get the option of car or caravan etc .iv'e previously had tomtoms and it works just as well.in the set up you can input the length width and weight of your caravan.it then calculates a safe route.

oh by the way i payed £380 inc delivery from mynewcheap.co.uk,they pricematched satnaveasy.com

I agree that Tomtom is a great GPS system, but there is a limit to the number of POI's you can have. Too many and the system doesn't work properly as I found to my cost when I put loads of French POI's on it!

That happens if you let the tomtom show the new POI's added. You need to turn each one off in turn.

You can now get tomtom truck, this allows you to enter lots of specific vehicle details such as height, length and weight.

Should make navigation even better for the longer vehicles as the normal tomtom does have the habbit of using the odd dodgy road.

Cheers, that clears it up for me.

Thanks for the reviews, especially the price of the Ventura.  I have not seen TomTom Truck.  Is it new and does it work?  I am sure there are many very good sat nav's out there, but so far I can only find 2 that are more caeavan friendly.  The reviews I have seen on the Ventura all seem to agree with you Bryan W, and it looks like a very capable unit and flips between caravan to car very easily,

Had a quick look for the TomTom Truck system mentioned.  Looks good, but it is an add on to a Tom Tom Go, which makes the overall oulay more than the Ventura.  So why/how is the TomTom better?

I emailed Snooper ragrding the Ventura. He is their email reply

Hi guys, I have had a reply from Snooper regarding the Ventura
1)Does it speak the road names and numbers?
The unit doesn’t speak the road names or numbers

2)Does it show the speed limits and speed of vehicle -
It shows the speed limits for Speed Cameras when alerting to them and the vehicle speed can be displayed in the bottom left hand corner of the screen (the other option there is the clock. You have to touch the screen there to change from clock to speed and vice versa)

3)What happens when the vehicle is approaching a site and it is down a narrow lane?
If there is no other way to get to the destination then it may calculate that route or in some instances it may advise that no suitable route is available when calculating a route to that destination (CL down a narrow lane!!!!!)

4)Can you put your own POI’s on it?
Currently not available but we are developing it. This should be available in the next one to two months

5)How much will map updates be?
Map updates are FREE until the end of 2009 as and when they are made available. After that they will be chargeable. Current price for updates is £79.99 inc VAT but may change in the future

I think I will give this one a miss for the moment. It is not as good as my existing Garmin and I don't think it will actually do as stated.

See page 16 of the CC magazine June
