Hi, we are looking for an easy erect awning for our newer van. Want something as quite long if possible. Has to be totally wind resistant, even where it fits the van wall.

Suggestions anyone please, thought there used to be some discounted ones available through UKCS but cannot find them.

This is the style by the way.http://www.dpbolvw.net/click-1428744-10475506?url=http://www.outdoormegastore.co.uk/acatalog/Outdoor_Revolution_Compacta-lite_400_Porch_Awning.html

Must be easier than putting up a full awning. We have an Issabella one that is a real pain to put up, tho its a great awning while up.

Looking for something that can be put up by 2 people in about 20 mins or so but big enough to use in the great british weather lol

I second that! The nearest thing to easy is our Bradcot Classic with the "easy pole system", but even then it takes the two of us about an hour to put it up.

As for wind resistant I don't there is such a thing in awnings!

We haved two awnings - the full awning which is great for over 3 days, and a porch for weekends.

I think you will really struggle to be totally wind resistant.  However the Ultima 390 might suit you.

hiya,

we have the compactalite 400 and its fantastic, there are wind guards? that fit tight to the side of the van.

as for easy to put up......... my DH is in a wheelchair so cant do much to help at all, we put ours up for the first time last weekend and it took us 30 minutes. DH helped to feed the awning onto the rail then parked up and held a guy rope when required to do so! I did all the rest by myself so if i can do it alone im sure a couple could have it up in 20 minutes max.

Have just bought the compactalite 400 this week and have had it up since monday. Very happy with it apart from the 2 centre poles which when the wind got quite high on Mon/Tues they lift up and down quite a bit and I was a bit worried they may mark or dent the side of the van.     I ended up taping an old rag to the side ot the van just below the awning rail just incase.

P.S. they are also on offer at Discover Leisure. I paid £179.99 for mine. I've seen them advertised for as much as £100 more than that.

Thanks for that Colin. Would not imagine using it much when windy. We have a full size Issabella, this is really for weekends. You hit lucky with Discover, they are £199 now.

Hi Bill, if you are near a discover branch I would go in and see. The price on their website has been £199 for a while. The instore price may be £179.   Worth a look, like I say,we only got ours on bank holiday monday at the Darlington branch.

Sorry Bill, forgot to mention, they don't come with a skirt for the bottom of the caravan. We didn't realise that till we got back and put it up.

We bought and have just used for the 1st time this week the Evolution 450.

We wanted exactly the same as you, full size (more or less), light and easy to put up. I have to say it fits all 3 requirements.

We picked it up from Discover on line and they have a £20 off offer at the moment so £309 with free delivery (though you have to phone to get the discount)!

http://www.discover.co.uk/awnings_discount

For me it has some distinct advantages over the "tunnel" type awnings.

  • Its bigger (450 x 275 deep v 400 x 235)
  • It has a single aluminum main pole and 1 roof stretcher pole
  • It has "padded draft seals" on the caravan sides (sounds gimmicky but I think it worked well)
  • It has no poles allong the long wall, meaning you can open it right up like a classic awning in the summer
  • It has far fewer guy lines needed in front giving a much cleaner line and fewer tripping points.
  • It's Lighter! ~14Kg v ~19Kg

We are a family of 5 and easily fitted in the space to eat round the free standing table from the van + have lots of room for keeping a cod box, boots, shoes, and general stuff at one end.

In terms of putting it up, it is DEFINITELY a 2 person job, but really not that hard and very quick. To get the awing on to the van and the pole in place took maybe 10 minutes followed by another 20 person minutes of pegging out. So with 2 on it, you could be totally done in 20 mins.

Once up it seemed very sturdy and was certainly totally waterproof for the downpour on Monday night!.

All in all Very Happy :-)

We will be using it as the main awning for 2 weeks in Cornwall this summer.

One thing to check though - We have a porchlite plus by OR too and I should have learned from this. Measure the gaps between your various windows to see if you can find a length of awning that will go onto the side of the van without over lap!

Both or ours are just too big to fit snugly between the windows, and so however you put it up, it prevents a window opening. For me this is not a big issue as I would rather have the lighter weight and ease of use of the biggest possible space, but check if you think it might bother you.
