Looking to buy a caravan.  As there are so many I am looking to narrow the search down.

Would like a caravan with a separate bedroom, however I have noticed some with the separate bedroom loose the living space which is not what I want to do.  Not really bothered about a shower.

Please advise.

Sharon

Hi, Yes that is unfortunately the price you have to pay for a fitted bedroom layout. The space it takes up is enormous, almost 40% of the caravan, especially the rear 'Island bedroom' The washroom is compromised to make up for the bed and to find a caravan without a shower is virtually impossible. We have been looking again at caravans and can't find a layout suitable with a large enough living area. Will make do with our current layout with side dinette and luxurious end washroom, all there is to do is make up the large front bed (about two minutes) and same in the morning taking it down. Good luck with your search Sharon.

Hi,

Have you looked at a compass 544, the rallye spec, best of the fixed bed layouts i've seen.

Swift Challenger 580??????

The problem with the fixed bed ones at the side means that if one of you want to go to bed early the other one is disturbed because the bathroom/ toilet is next door. Also you have to climb over each other to get out of bed in the night. Have tried both and the one below is the best for us.

580 Layout

Hi we have got a swift conqueror 610 lux and have the best of both worlds,we have an end dinette that converts into a double bed and can be enclosed with a door so when its just the two of us we leave it as the bedroom but when we have vistors staying over we convert it back to the dinette in the daytime for that extra space ,the size of the bathroom has not been compromised with this layout either.

If you have a fixed bed you will lose a certain amount of space but you have to weigh up the pros and cons. Personally i could never make up a bed so the little bit i lose doesn't bother me.
The main thing you have to look at before asking this question though is can your towcar pull any van?

Go for a 5 berth with a sliding door that can be used as a fixed bed or extra seating. You also find with a fixed bed that the front bed is smaller therefore less seating area at the front.

Have a look at the Fleetwood Heritage 640ESD.  No longer available new - but some really nice second hand ones around.

http://www.caravanfinder.co.uk/caravan/Private/EA37AB105B1AD384802575B9004B9475/

the photos don't do it justice!

It has a separate rear bedroom with a transverse bed and a sensible sized living area that makes up to an enormous double.

The shower and loo are separate - and sectioned off from the bedroom and living areas so both couples can access the bathroom in privacy.

We have a 2001 Elddis Avante 534 but I know they continued making that layout for some time after that though it's not in the current range.  It has a fixed bed with corner shower / toilet.  The shower / toilet room is small but it sounds like you'd probably use it the way we do - i.e., we use the loo only and shower in site facilities.

The kitchen area is big enough (though I wouldn't have been upset if there had been more storage space) but it was the lounge area that swung it for us.

There's usually just the two of us and two dogs but a couple of friends camp so evenings are spent in our 'van rather than their tent.  There's plenty of room for all four to be comfortable or, if they're not with us, we can each lie flat out if we want to.  I'm 5'4" and OH is 5'9" so neither of us are basketballers (!) but we're not skinny with it so for us to be perfectly comfy, there has to be a decent space.  All that and a single axle, too.

Good luck in your search - we're now confirmed fixed bed owners and will never go back to making up a bed every night.

It would help a bit if you would tell us what you were towing with, and how many people it would have to sleep at a time.

If there only two of you there are loads to choose from.

We have a 4 berth for two of us.
Bags of room.
