Before we bought our caravan, we had a Witter Bike carrier which sat in mounting frame that bolted on to the towball area of my 4 X 4. Now when we first got our caravan which has an ALKO hitch on it, the clearances between the hitch and the bike carrier is very small. I had to take bike carrier off, so we can use the caravan.
Has anyone had any experience of this and how do you get round it.
is it okay to use a spacer bracket between the ball and the towing frame of the car to give you the clearance.
If the bike carrier is mounted onto the frame of the tow bar don't forget to allow for the weight of the carrier and bike's when calculating the allowed nose weight of the car. if the plated load of the car or tow bar is exceeded this can invalidate your insurance.
I.E. max nose weight allowed by car minus combined weight of bike's and carrier = max nose of caravan. As most car's have a limit of 75 to 80 Kg, a bike and carrier can weigh 30 kg's this will only leave less than 50 Kg's for the caravan.
