Hi, not sure if this is in the right forum so apologies if not.  After many years of camping in either a tent or folding camper we decided to look into Motorhomes and have sadly come to the conclusion that we just cannot manage the running costs (we'd have to pay for storage aswell) so wanting to upgrade to something that doesn't take ages to set up and doesn't need to stay dry when packing away we thought we'd look into pop top caravans.

Does anyone know of any dealers in the south please?  I found the web site for the one in Ringwood, Dorset and was sure there was one in Swindon which would be nearer to us in Reading but can't find a web site.  We think we might be able to get it in the garage even though we have an up and over door which would restrict height.  If any pop top owners can give any advice on models etc. that would be great too.  There are 3 of us and 1 small dog so we don't want anything too big because of storage and towing.

Any help or advice, as always, gratefully received.  Thanks a million.

Jules

How much do you want to spend? If you put Eriba into ebay search there are plenty on there at the mo.

When looking at an Eriba, examine steel tube chassis members on underside v. carefully for rust. If you can find a good'un they last very well, 80s Eribas can generally be found in excellent condition for £2k or so.

Thanks for the tip Kabbes re Eribas - I have seen these and quite liked the look of them.  We're looking to spend around the 5k (ish) mark although if the right model came along I might be able to persuade OH to increase this a bit!

Still hoping someone else might know of other dealers in the South?

Jules

you may have already sorted out a pop top by now, but there is a supplier in Wokingham.  They import the Trigano Silver pop tops.  www.campersandleisure.co.uk (dorset) have a variety of different makes and ages of pop tops, you can have a good look round them and their staff are very helpful & friendly

We bought our Fleurette Tamaris 31. 2 berth from Campers & Leisure. Found them to be helpful & their website was good. We previously looked at the Eriba vans but we thought that they were rather over rated (& over priced!) OK they have the retro look but we found that they were heavier that the Fleurette that we now have. The weight of this is 750kg loaded & we tow with a 1.5 Micra Diesel with ease.
Our Fleurette has solid sides to the pop top, unlike the Eribas and is roomier. We have a hob but no grill,(our van is the continental version), but we have a larger fridge, there is a washroom with a cassette loo & basin with hot water & hot water to the sink.

We have been delighted with our purchase, unlike the folding camper that the Fleurette replaced!!

Could we start a Poptop section ?

& why do caravan magazines always give towing awards to cars able to tow tanks.

I would like to read whether small cars are any good towing say up to 900 kg. There can not be many cars not able to tow an eriba puck for example.

It's always good to read comments about pop tops and to share information & views - especially as you say, Magazines tend to leave us out!

We tow ours with a 1.6 diesel Picasso, although in all fairness, the car came before the pop top.  We used to have a Conway Tardis before.
