We noticed that the caravan wheels were extremely hot when we got back to the caravan storage site today, we had been driving for about 2.5hrs they were so hot you couldn't leave your hand on the steel wheel hubs, we haven't noticed this before so I wondered if this was normal, we then touched our car wheel hub and it was hot, but you could leave your hand there, but not on the caravan wheel, it was the same on both caravan wheels.
If it's rolling easily then the brakes aren't binding and it'd be rare for both wheel bearings to be shot so it's most likely just down to normal friction and braking, caravans use drum brakes which aren't vented so do build up a lot of heat. If you are concerned take the wheels off whilst supported on axle stands and check that they spin freely and the brake system is correctly adjusted.

Worth jacking it up to check the wheels turn freely (with the brake off, the other wheel chocked and ideally hitched to the car with the brake on to ensure it cannot move. You should also use an axle stand if you plan to reach underneath.
With it jacked up, check that the wheels turn freely and also check for any movement up/down or left/right which would indicate a bearing failure. Also check for any noise from the wheel bearing which is difficult to describe as you would expect some noise from the brakes.
You could listen for wheel bearing noise from within the van whilst towing it, but this is not a good practice for several reasons.
1)Someone moving about in the van could cause instability.
2) The van has very primitive suspension, so the person in the van will find it difficult to avoid being thrown about.
3) There is virtually no protection offered in the event of an accident to a passenger in a van.
4) It is illegal.
However for the purpose of listening for a noisy wheel bearing, it would be possible to tow slowly around a private car park or private road with someone inside listening for noises, though if one is found to have some play in it then that will need changing anyway.
When wheel bearings start to go. Or are in need of adjustment. Then it will make the breaks bind. Even if you jack the caravan up the wheels could still turn freely but bind when lowered back down. both need looking at.
If the brakes aren't binding, I would have a good look at the wheel bearings to make sure they have plenty of grease and are properly adjusted. It's certainly something you should investigate.
Mrs Mop I had this problem with my van a few weeks ago and was thinking about wheel bearings etc but on the van you have got they are non adjustable like mine I found that the tyre pressures were wrong 1 was 5 psi low and the other was 10psi low I inflated them to the correct pressure and the problem has gone I hope this is some help to you

Thanks reedrider, we only had it serviced end of May and they replaced two new tyres, anyway I rang the dealer up today and told them about them getting very hot and they said it was normal, I told them they were hotter than our car and they still said it was normal, we were assuming that the tyre pressure would have been correct from when they replaced the tyres.
It really isn't normal that the wheels are so hot that you can't keep your hand on them. Further investigation required. It's better not to assume the tyre pressures will be correct. Far better to trust only yourself and check them.
