just got a new van,and as usuall not enough sockets, can i run another one direct from the consumer box, taking a feed from the existing ring main, just putting my new cable with the existing one, and will i have to upgrade the fuse
There is no ring main in a caravan - they are all spurs. There's no problem running another spur from the nearest convenient socket as the maximum supply will be 16Amps.
yes you can use a junction box, but you really do need flexible cable, not the solid core twin and earth, the solid core will eventually break with the flex/movement on the van.
you may even find the flex will fit with no junction.
Very interested in this. Can I take a spur from an existing socket, and wire it to a double socket placed where I want it? We could use a socket in a more convenient place.
My van when I bought it had 1 single socket in it. Via junction box situated in one of bed boxes, I now have a further 2 singles (one inside bedbox for battery charger etc), double on centre chest of drawers, and single in kitchen cupboard for small electric oven. The original single I still use and plug in a 4-way adapter to plug the TV, kettle, and mobile charger in on. Works fine for me (12 ft ABi standard 2 berth layout) and so long as I don't have the fan heater and kettle on at same time it's enough for me.
If you are looking for an article on how to do this then please send me an e-mail asking for the Add an Extra socket information using the e-mail link in my signature, please remember to add your ukcampsite user name as it makes it a lot easier for me to identify who is getting in touch.
I added four extra sockets to our van, don't use them all at once but it does mean that various things can be plugged in at a more suitable point.
Again, not a job to do DIY if you are not sure of electrics etc, if in doubt get a qualified chap to do the job for you.
