I would prefer a German van and someone pointed me at a German site (thanks) which is very useful.
Has anyone bought second-hand from Germany and can explain the process or is it pretty straight-forward? Can you claim back the VAT (or German equivalent)? Any modifications needed?
(I realise there may be issues with the spec and servicing and insurance over here but not too concerned about those for now).
Finally, there seems to be a fairly common layout in German vans, with bunks at the back, fixed bed up front and seats in the middle - seems a great layout to me (no UK equivalent) but am I missing something? Is there a downside to it?
Second hand caravans are sold in Germany inclusive of tax I think so you just pay for it & tow it home. Bring a numberplate of course. Although German caravans are subject to TUV(MOT test)& are registered like vehicles they will be 'logged out' ie deregistered on the dealer's forecourt & as the one that you buy will be for immediate export & there is no DVLA caravan registration in the UK(there should be imho)you just tow it away.
If you buy a powered vehicle ie a motorhome, the dealer will put temp. export places on & get you short term insurance for the drive home.
For payment you can do a bank transfer, your bank to dealer's bank. If you can agree a price in £s with the dealer & transfer £s to the German bank usually you will get a more favourable rate of exchange than if you get your UK bank to change into €s before the transfer.
You will find most Large German dealers are used to dealing with export customers & will speak English. You can make you initial contact by phone or email in English.

Thanks Kabbes - I asked about the VAT because several of the adverts I saw said 'VAT eligible' on them, or something along those lines, so I thought that might mean you could claim something back...
Fortunately, my wife speaks German, which should make things easier
You might like to try Ernst Caravans at Ettenheim, Germany. (On the French border and south of Strasbourg.)They have all vans listed on website and will negotiate by email if you prefer. We bought ours this way and were very pleased with the part exchange deal agreed beforehand and their help when there - even finding a nearby campground for our short stay . Same caravan bought new in UK was 3250 GBP more expensive. Ask for Alex Ernst. (0049-7822-8938). Some UK German caravan dealers get their vans from them.
Thanks for that - I've looked on that and another german site and they don't seem to list Geist as a manufacturer - are they called something else in Germany?

'VAT eligible' You should declare the caravan being bought abroad and pay VAT on it.
nothing to declare?
If asked you show the German sales reciept it will state that local VAT(called USt, I think)has been paid so there will be nothing to pay when you enter the UK.
I think it is possible to buy a new(but not secondhand)vehicle in Germany VAT free, & pay VAT in UK.
I think if you bought new in Germany, VAT free & then went on, say a years tour of Europe before returning to the UK they would still catch up with you. German VAT rate is 19%
I don't know if Geist is available in Germany as threy made under the LMC umbrella I believe,
However we have just ordered a geist from elite caravans in northampton, Brand new, £3000 under what geist are selling them for, Got the exact van we wanted for just over 10k, they have loads in stock, it depends on your budget but may save you the hastle of going to germany
