Somebody told me other day that the reason the sky cards are being changed over for new ones is because some people are taking their sky boxes out of the UK.
Are these new cards going to stop caravanners/motorhomes etc from taking their satellite on holiday, if so how would the card or box know where it is picking up the signal from?
If so, would a freesat card work in Western Europe in a Sky box?
Sounds unlikely to me. The way to stop caravanners/motorhomers etc. would be to change the satellite footprint, which wouldn't need a change of viewing cards.
I suspect the more likely alternative is that Sky believe there to be enough hacked/cloned/pirated viewing cards to make the expense of rolling out a new edition worthwhile. I've seen a few warnings recently not to buy second-hand cards off the bay etc. because they'll soon be useless.
I've no idea about Freesat cards in Sky boxes but I suspect you'll get a lot more info from here.

Seems unlikely and just another rumour. Anyway as long as you pay your subscription, why can't you watch Sky in the EU.
What it may prevent is you using your sky card in another box as it may be locked to the box at home. This would impact caravanners, but as you can only use it if you have paid your subscription I do not see why they should go down this route.

We are in Western Europe.
I do however know people that use them in the Eastern Mediterranean. Same box and card, you just need a bigger dish, a much bigger dish, in fact about a 4 meter dish to be exact.
I would hazard a guess that Sky change their cards as it doesn't take long for the cards to be cloned and spread around. Ending up with many people with a free card that you can put into almost any spare box and watch Sky for zilch.

------------- We have Approved Mobile Workshop Status
I'm a satellite enthusiast so may be able to help.
Sky Tv use an encryption company called NDS, who provide a method of scrambling subscription channel's, there encryption is very good and has never been hacked, so there is no such thing as a copied sky card that works.
NDS have a contract with Sky to renew the method of encryption every five years, this requires a new card and is the only reason for the change. All blue cards will soon be switched off and only the new white cards will work.
you can watch sky without a card, but will not discuss it on the forum.
Thanks
I got a sky box without a card in my caravan. never had any problem at all using it anywhere including France.

We have the new Sky cards and one of the old black boxes in another room. The black box has stopped working due to the changeover so i just take out the card from the new style white box slot into black box and i can then change over the channels - a bit of a pain but it works
