Sky renews its cards for the same reason that banks renew them - to keep out unscrupulous fraudsters and they've been very successful at doing that.

If you have an active subscription you will receive a replacement viewing card with the changeover probably taking until the autumn of this year to complete.  If you're getting an onscreen message telling you to insert your new card but you haven't yet received it, contact Sky.

So long as your subscription is active, your card (old, blue card until it's replaced with a new, white card) will work wherever your box is.  Bearing in mind that Sky's licence to broadcast and therefore the terms and conditions which you agreed to by activating your card, say it cannot be used outwith the UK and Ireland.

I'm a satellite enthusiast so may be able to help.
Sky Tv use an encryption company called NDS, who provide a method of scrambling subscription channel's, there encryption is very good and has never been hacked, so there is no such thing as a copied sky card that works.
NDS have a contract with Sky to renew the method of encryption every five years, this requires a new card and is the only reason for the change. All blue cards will soon be switched off and only the new white cards will work.

you can watch sky without a card, but will not discuss it on the forum.
Thanks

Mike
so mike how can we get more info from u regarding your quote

Not in an open forum, sorry.

I can tell you That
There is no way to copy a skycard and get it to open subscription channels for free. Never has been
There are no Chipped skyboxes that open subscription channels for free, same applies for any make of sat box.
A sky box is locked to work with 1 skycard only.
However, Skycards can work in a certain type of non Sky set top box if you buy the right one.

I dont pretend to be a pro installer, just a hobby.

I have a non skybox which ill be using in my new caravan (pick my new van up on sunday). I take my official skycard with me which is the full package and pop the card into my non skybox and it works fine.
The reason i use a different sat box for sky is this
No need to remove my sky system at home.
Box is very small 7.5 wide x 5 deep x 1.5 height (inches) and will run on 12 volt as it uses an external power supply. so all in all great for a caravan.

Thanx
Mike

We got sky in 1992 and went to Germany 1994-1997 with the sky box, the subscription came out of and UK bank account, we never had any problems. I cant remember if there as a card change, we must had the sky registered to a UK address, I think it was my parents. as far as I know British forces still take the sky box with them, and do the same.

It might be different as we have sky plus now, and it has to be plugged into the phone line, that wasn't the case then.

Some premium sky channels (bbc1, sky sports 1&2 and more) for the forces are broadcast on a satellite located at 7 degrees east, so these chaps can watch some home TV when they are serving in countries outside the sky footprint.

I have two boxes at home on Sky MultiRoom and both have full access to Premium Channels. Each card is "married" to each box. However if I take out a card and put it in another box I lose the premium Channels (Films & Sport).

This doesn't concern me so I have a spare box in my caravan and simply take a card (new one too) with me and insert it. I can then watch all of the other channels including Sky One etc.

The reason you shouldnt take it abroad is that Sky is only licenced in the British Isles, no technical reason. The further you go out of the footprint (broadcast area) the bigger the dish you require.

The only way Sky can tell if you aren't using it at home is when they dial into your box via your phone line to interrogate the system.

Thats why the agreement for Sky MultiRoom insists you have the line connected all the time.

Other than SkyMultiRoom agreements Im sure the standard agreement insists you connect your phone line for the first 12 months only. After that you could take your box and card to Outer Mongolia if you could get a signal.

Hope this helps.

You are correct about multiroom which must have both boxes connected to the phone line at all times so sky can keep a check of you. However if you just have a single box installation for an extra £30 (i think) you have the option NOT to connect the box to the phone line.

My non Sky sat box in the caravan will open all channels including premium when i put my official subscription sky card in. The box has no sky EPG and you have to do an auto search every so often as channels change frequency but works very well indeed.
Another feature about the box is this.
I have on old wireless router which i will take to the caravan. All i need to do is power up the router (either 240v or 12v) connect my sat box to the router with a standard ethernet lead. my sat box is now part of a little network in the caravan. Now i switch on my laptop and open up a web browser (firefox works best) and type in the IP Address of my Sat Box (box has its own little website built into it) and can stream tv from my sat box to laptop, the advantage of this is my laptop runs off its own battery (as they all do) so i can watch tv in the back or front of the van, or in the awning or outside, where ever is in range of my router. The picture quality is very good when streaming, in fact juts as good as the connected tv.

Our Sky box has not been connected to the telephone line for several years and we have never had a problem but then we do not have multi room.
