Out of interest, I kept up the e-mail swapping with the bloke on this original ad and he seemed fairly genuine, although I was getting very short, one line answers to anything I asked.
Finally, I asked why the ad had been pulled off eBay and for the CRiS number of the van and it all went pear-shaped. His reply was:
'I have some problems with eBay fees and I end the item. All the papers are in eBay custody I can't give you the cris number.View is not an option due to my location. I have contacted eBay to support my transaction, and they will provide security for both of us, buyer and seller. A full refund policy will be available during the transaction plus 5 days witch you will have to inspect the caravan .If you really want to buy this van I need to know your delivery information and eBay will send further instructions including payment and delivery terms.Reply soon with your descision'
So, despite a name of 'Scott Williams' appearing on his e-mail, he is very obviously foreign and, surprise, surpise, he can't get the CRiS number or let me see the van in advance, even though it was originally a classified ad and not an auction.
I'm sure there are perfectly honest eBay sellers out there and, as you can see from this, IMO it is very easy to spot the scammers...
...and my 'no free lunch' philosophy is still a good 'un
