Hi hubbys seriously considering buying an avondale pentland glx (1998) off ebay. The item number is 270409574696. Please have a look and give me your opinions!

He's claiming its a six berth with the back dinette turning into bunks and the same with the side one. I've scrutinised his pics and i can't see how the side dinette can turn into bunks. There is no pull out bit at the top where the bunk should be kept and there is no ledge on the wall to rest it on.

Also i'm not happy with the way he is saying he wants all funds before delivery. We could go up and pick it up ourselves but its a long way from us. He has said he'll meet halfway but again wants all the funds first!

He has 100% feedback with others being happy with caravans they have bought from him but how do i know these aren't his friends leaving this feedback!

Hypothetically if this van is ok is it worth the £4200 he is willing to accept for it?, also as i can't see the 2nd bunk (so i doubt there is one), do you think we should put the offer down to say £3700. (there is no awning with the van either)

I wish we could find the perfect van for us, we've been trawling so many websites and papers.......sigh.....17

Thanks for any advice!

I know nothing about these caravans, nor do I know the seller. But I wouldn't buy anything from such a long way away and you have to pay for it before I see it!!

I'd keep looking locally, be patient.

My mate once drove about 100 miles to buy a caravan off eBay. He couldn't find the address, but stopped to ask a policeman for directions. The policeman was surprised the seller was still selling caravans because he'd already been convicted of selling stolen caravans. I'm not saying this is the case with yours (I suspect it's genuine) but you need to be confident of EVERYTHING before you part with cash.

Ask him for a picture of the bunks made up.

He will do it if he wants to sell it

If you don't feel happy with this purchase....then I would advise to stay clear and look for a van nearer home or from a dealer.

The biggest worry you have buying a caravan is the possibility that it is damp.   A damp van isn't worth anything.  You should be paid for taking one away - so take care.

Make sure you inspect the van before you commit to buying or you'll be taking a HUGE risk - especially as the van is on Ebay.  Take a damp meter with you and use it.  If you cannot do that, then walk away.  There are lots more fish .............

Regards
Andrew

Come on lets use some brains, to buy without inspection is just plain stupid. There are hundreds of vans out there at dealers and on e-bay.

Find one at least fairly close to home (I drove 200 miles round trip) and inspect it.

Good luck

If I am looking at the same van then there is a photo showing both bunks up and in place. I still wouldnt buy without going to inspect it though.

sorry but they are asking to much for  that van, also one thing strikes me a s very strange, the cushions are all covered in the plastic, add to that its a twin wheeler and what do you get? pikey van!!!

oh by the way the last picture on the right has the bunk beds that made up, dont expect the cushions on the top bunks to be very thick, at best they are 2 inches thick,

i think a more realistic price for that van bearing in mind that avondale are out of business now so parts will be harder to get hold of, would be around £3250. if you do go and buy it take a damp tester with you and check it before you hand over any cash and make sure you see every last thing working fully. not to mention you want to see the criss documents too

On no account part with money before seeing any caravan. The listing you mention does actually say you can pay cash on collection & this is the only way you should buy a caravan off ebay. If the seller does not agree to this, dont buy.

It is also not really sensible to bid sight unseen, you should always view caravan beforehand & check it thoughly for damp & damage & also that the caravan has not been stolen, it should be CRIS registered & you can check with them. If you do bid blind & then arrive to find the caravan 'not as described' ie rubbish when the ebay listing stated it was in good nick you can walk away.

Hi thanks for the replies. I emailed them again today and the wife put those bunk pics up for me. I do like it still but yes would definately ask for a CRIS number and bring a damp reader ( by the way how do these work? whats this % thing all about?)

I had to laugh at the pikey comment......perhaps they just didn't want to ruin the covers, they are very light after all!

How do i find out if its nicked or not? Do the CRIS people ask for the sellers full name and address?

I would avoid, how old is the 'van?  Far too much money. 19ft seems short on a twin axle.  No caravanner would call it a four wheeler surely?

damp meter had two prongs that you push into the wall and it screams like mad if its damp, the more water content it detects the loader it gets, on avondales, check the back corners and the front windows with partiular attn, also the floors tend to delaminate more so than other vans, check for bounce on the kitchen area

the covers on the seat remark, this is mainly found on pikey vans, the rest of us yes we may cover them but we use fleeces etc etc the covers themselves are very hard wearing and wipe over very well so this is not the norm.

cris will tell you the current owners address, this should be the same as the place you are seeing the caravan at, or if they are proper dealers a receipt to say they have part ex for the van, etc etc
