I have a 1 yr old and caravaning with him at the min is a bloody nightmere when it comes to bed time.

first we tried folding out the double bed so it was a double and he screamed all night because we shut the door,(door closes to make end bedroom type of thing)  then we left it as a single and put a cot side on and he pushed the cot side off so we tried tapeing the cot side so he couldnt moove it so he climbed over the top of it.

we tried the double with the cot side and once agin he pushed it off or climbed over it

we have tried putting him in his buggy and he gets out we have the travel cot but it will only fit in the awning?

andy suggestions apart from sleeping in the awning as we dont always put up the awning when we go away x

We never had any trouble getting ours to go to bed in the caravan. Which is strange because our youngest was a little *&$£ to get to bed at home. Could you leave the double bed up 24/7 and make it his play area. That way when he gets tired he can fall asleap there. Also leave the door open as he may feel alone if he cannot see mum and dad in a strange place.

All I can say is it gets better! lol

We have camped since our 4 yr old was couple of mths old, in a caravan/tent and folding camper, some times we would end up letting him sleep with one of us (anything for a nights sleep!!) he is fine now he understands whats happening and sleeps fine, hes usually knocked out by the fresh air!

Hi, I can sympathise with you ours are 8 & 13 now and I look back at that time with fond memories!!

All I can suggest is to keep him active and busy until a late bed time, Dont be in a rush to get him to bed too early, just enjoy being with him and playing with him. Ease off with half an hour to go and give him some warm milk and he will be so knackered that he will zonk out quick, then pop a cork or pull a ring and enjoy!!

All too often, I tried to stick to the usual fixed bedtime when away, get them down for some piece and quiet, but it is not the usual situation.

Looking back I realise that I wasted a lot of what should have been "fun time" by fighting to get them to bed too early!

Enjoy the kids when they are young, they soon grow out of it, then the fun really starts!

Good luck!

We have a 2 and a half year old that we have been taking caravaning for about 2 years now.  We put him on a single bed but fit the bed guard that he has on his normal bed at home now.  The bed guard has poles that go under the matterest, these poles have holes in.  So I just lined up where I wanted it fixed to an just drilled a couple of holes in the slats for the bed.  Then I put a bolt, with washers and a wing nut and fix it down.  He cannot push it away at all and never bothered about trying to climb over it.  We still use it now and he just climbs to the end of the bed and gets down.  We did used to pad out the bottom of the bed with a storage crate so he couldnt get passed that way easily.  We have to have the bed set up all of the time or we would have to keep removing the bed guard and the fixings but it has never bothered us.

But at the end of the day kids are all different and what worked for us may not work for you.

We have bunk beds at the end of our van, so we set the one bunk up and tie a net across the gap.

That keeps our little 1 year old in, she is very similar to yours, was great until she started standing.

We have a 1 year old and a 2.5 year old. We put the double bed out, take the cushions off (store in toilet room or awning) and the baby has a travel cot on the bed and the toddler has a ready bed. We put them accross the bed instead of the usual way and it works fine!

He doesnt sleep any later unfortunately but at least he stays put and is comfy!

The 2.5 year old sleeps great, she loves it so it does get better!

We used a travel cot when darling daughter was that sort of age, and put it up on the platform where side of the rear dinette /  double should have been.  (Had to make a wooden sheet to bridge the slats, and extend the width slightly)

We left it up all the time, and just used the other side of the rear dinette a seat when seeing to her, or for dumping baggage during the day, living out of the front dinette.

As she got older we found that she doesn't like being sealed in because the van is actually better light sealed and thus darker than her room at home, so we leave the door partly open, and just keep quiet till she has dropped off.   Alternatively we leave one of the window blinds one click open.

She has outgrown the travel cot now, and sleeps along the dinette cushion, but with the back cushion removed to give the full width.

She is still a nightmare to settle sometimes, but then, that goes for home too!
