Our 8 month old van has to go back to the dealer for warranty work. This will be the third time it's had to go back since January. This time, they have told us that we have to sign a disclaimer saying that we are leaving the van at our own risk (i.e. our own insurance) Because we can only get it there at a weekend, we have to take it on Saturday and collect it the following weekend. We have never been asked to sign a disclaimer before so I asked why we had to this time, wondering if it is because we have to leave the van there. They said that it is a new policy and even owners of vans coming in for the day for service have to sign the disclaimer. We have never come across this before. Anyone else had to do this?
Mum and dad had to do this when theres went in for repairs, Not sure why they just said it was down to insurance! Although if you are leaving it there I would still hope they lock it away for you over night rather than leaving it on the car park.

robin52, yes, I suppose we would which is what concerns us most. The van will be stored at the bottom of their sales area which is protected by a barrier and huge gates at night, also it is monitored by CCTV, so theft is not our major concern. The main concern is any damage.
We have never been asked to sign a disclaimer and that’s with many years experience of three very different dealerships. Most of the time they tell us that they don't want our security on as its covered by their insurance. Ours would also not cover it without.
pulling a fast one there.if you are leaving it at a dealers then there insurance will need to cover it.as i see it he could not be in business without this assurance on the site.just say why are you not insured?

I am going to guess the cost of theft/damage insurance for a dealer is quite high & maybe he has discovered if he gets customers to sign this disclaimer instead he wont need his own insurance so saving himself probabley £1000s p.a in premiums.
If this dealer is the only place you can get warranty work done, then I suppose you have no choice but to sign it, I would speak to your insurance co. but I would guess provided your insurers conditions are met you will be insured.
It would be a good idea to get the dealer to sign summat stating he will afix security devices to your caravan as per your insurers conditions while in his care. Words to that effect should be on the disclaimer he wants you to sign, anyway.
I would speak to the dealer again to find out what you are going to sign for. Then speak to your own insurers to ask for their opinion and explain the situation. If the dealer disclaims all liability and the worse happens, such as theft or damage at the dealers, then you might find your own insurance could refuse a claim for various reasons. Hopefully there shouldn't be any problems as your insurers should allow something like a service for a week with no issues. A quick couple of phone calls should clarify the matter, at least to your insurers and your own satisfaction.
because you are not there to fix a clamp and hitch lock each time it is left ie. in the first hour or arrival and all the time it is stood unattended as required by your policy then you may NOT be insured whatever you sign.double check with your own insurance and ask them to check his insurance.where it is kept when stolen is a get out clause for any insurance payout.i have read of a least two not paid because it was not where it was insured to be.
