I am towing from Nottingham to Whitby and route planner suggests a longish stretch on the B1249 Driffield to Staxton, is this B road suitable for caravan towing ?
Staxton Hill should be ok going down. But it is a route I would personally avoid going up.Try A1 to junc 45, A64 to Malton.A169 to Pickering then to Whitby (you may recognise some of this route if you watch Heartbeat). You could also stay on the A64 to Scarborough then A171 up the coast road to Whitby.

be warned that the a169 has some steep gradients and hairpins in places, nothing steeper than 1 in 5 however.plenty of vans use the route but just be aware there are some `demanding` bits !!!
We are regular visitors, when towing we go A19, A172, A173 and then A171 straight down into Whitby, no nasty surprises on this route and less traffic jams with holiday traffic heading to the east coast.
I travel to Whitby often from Leeds and would suggest the M1 or A1, depending on which is nearer to you, to the A64 then the Malton, Pickering and follow the signs for whitby. It is a well used route for caravans and a nice drive too.I take my trailer tent that way and have never had a problem, apart from lunatics overtaking on blind bends etc, which unfortunately happens everywhere there is a B road to a popular location.
