I put a 'proper' outside socket on my 1992 Swift last year.
I did consider the IP44 type socket connector under the van option as I too was a bit worried about cutting through the sidewall for the housing but having got my mates cordless jigsaw I have to say it was pretty easy.
I ran a spur from a socket in a rear cupboard via a junction box and fused ON/OFF switch and It looks pretty neat inside and out - cheap too, all bits cost about £15 total.
