hi all,   we are recent converts from trailer tent to caravan and enjoyed our first weekend away recently - luxury  !!  loved it,  cant believe we didnt upgrade sooner .

TV poor reception  - didnt get chance to ask anyone on the site last time we were there so thought i'd ask on this forum as it seems to be well thought of.

The van is a ten year old stirling europa which we are going to site for the rest of the season but i need some tips to improve the TV reception -  the site seems to be full of sky dishes for season sited vans so i'm wondering if this is an indication that the signal strength is not too good generally -  The stirling has one of the usual  "flying saucer" type antenna's which i know nothing about.... just by plugging into the socket in the van we get a fuzzy Channel 4 and not much else..   i've thought about a booster but not sure which one to go for.   any help ideas or thoughts would be much appreciated.        many thanks

... ask around on the site about Freeview reception.. You can get a standard tv aerial, fit it to a pole (old awning pole might be ok) strap it to a convenient place.( where the jockey wheel is!) and plug a digital freeview box in. Go through the setting up procedure and hopefully youve got about 40 channels! Aldi and Lidel do them for about £20!

.. thanks for such a quick response    ....   we took with us a set top box that the kids use at home... and that wouldnt work at all, even after set up, so i guess that means we need something more than the caravan aerial,  i have a pole that i can try next  time.  would it be futile to get a booster as well as using the pole / antenna ??

I keep on writing this but as it's not what people want to hear, I guess it'll continue to be ignored.

Fact is, TV systems don't care that you're in a caravan and would like to have a tiny aerial that will fit neatly onto the van.

They only care about boring technical things such as signal strength, polarisation and band group.

In other words, to get proper reception you need exactly the same aerials the locals have on their houses.

That's why satellite systems are becoming so popular. The same system will work practically everywhere you go in the UK.

I think, on a 10 year old van, you will have a flying saucer aerial. You will only get a picture with that if you camp within sight of a transmitter!

You might find setting up the dish is such a hassle that buying a cheap aerial and putting it on a pole is easier. If you really want to upgrade you could buy a Status 530 aerial which will normally give you excellent reception on digital.

We have both satellite and aerial but have not used the sat once this year so we leave it at home now.

keep an eye on maplins they do the full sat kit with dish etc and a freesat box for about £70, for the support dont spend loads on a purpose built thing go into your shed or garage and get that rotary airer that has been gathering dust for the last 10 years, de-string it, cut a foot or so off the 3 airer bits, turn upside down and a perfect stand, bang in 3 pegs and it will be solid

as for status flying saucers.hmmm some folk swear by them, most swear at them
