I would really love a BedBug/Turtle/Cargo type tear drop trailer caravan but can't afford to buy one.

Hubby has said we should build one ourselves (he's a mechanic and a very handy DIYer) as there are plenty of places on the Net that you can buy plans from to do just that!

Just wondering if anyone on here has attempted such a plan and how it turned out!

Any comments, advice or information on undertaking such a project would be very much appreciated.

there arte plans for sale usually on ebay.i have a small caravan that looks likean over grown busmar sidecar. it was towed behind an outfit about 25 yrs ago. its based around the bed in a shed we call it. i,m sure your husband can figure it out ply sides aluminium roof ,big door at back lifts like a hatch back. press stud awning drops from there to give standing area. mine is called the devon piskette.

Have you thaught of a tent traylor? I built a v' lightweight one which was an all wood base and canvas top structure. (the mesquito was wood). That was in 1972 and am sorry I sold it now. Closed it was 10'X4' & 4'high(see over top.rear view) and was on 5 cwt indespension units.Towed with 500cc NSU Prinz. I have lots of photos but unfortunatly they are on film and have not got round to buying a digital film scanner yet.Just an idea. Chris.

I can't help other than to say my uncle was given a tiny little 2 berth caravan and has done a brilliant job on converting it into what he wants. It has loads of beds in it now lol. I've given him my old 6 berth 'van and i can't wait to see what he does with it lol.

Your dh sounds like he will be able to do a good job. Good Luck

Thanks for all the replies and encouragement.

Think I am going to build a mini prototype our of matcxhsticks/lolly sticks/card to show hubby the kind of thing I'm hoping for and let him take it from there!!

Hello Helen,
I did consider building a Teardrop a couple of years ago and discovered a load of info out there on the net. Unfortunately I got too old too quickly. Aches and pains in abundance. Anyway, perhaps not the type of thing you are looking at but the link below will give you food for thought if nothing else. Links from the site give even more info. Great to see how it all started from the old plans.

nice one,good site .mine looks abit like a boxster, back lifts up for entry n makes a stand up awning area. seat is made at backend. sit with legs in awning. think its better to build on a chassis though.get cracking everybody should have one.
