We are considering upgrading from tent to caravan.  We are looking at a two berth Freedom Jetstream 1st class or twin.  We are limited to the weight (can't afford to change car too).  The trouble is those we have looked at have the doors on the continental side - is this a problem?  We will want to use mainly for weekends and holidays in UK.

We have a van with the door on the 'wrong' side. Ours is a Fleurette, around the size of the Freedom that you are looking at. We tow comfortably with a Micra 1.5 diesel & can pitch the van across the width of most pitches with the awning at the front.

Just remember that if you stop by the roadside that the door will face the road & not the kerbside!

We've never had a problem with ours, people are generally intrigued with our dinky van.

Have a look at my gallery, a couple of pics there.

Thanks for that Angela - we are still pondering - yours looks really cute, does it have hot & cold water and a loo?

Our van is a 2001 Fleurette Tamaris 31T, it's a pop-top so is a lower line for towing & helps with storage too.Ours weighs in at 750kg fully laden. Gives a payload of around 130kg, so the van is around 620kg.

We have a Truma heater which gives us running hot & cold water to the sink & the wash basin, we have a built in cassette Thetford loo. There is a 2 ring hob but no grill, but the fridge is larger than those with a grill, we get over this by taking a small toaster & I have a Remoska which is great for all sorts of cooking(several threads on here about these).

It's a two berth but we have slept our young grand daughter in the van by using the bunks as two singles & have her sleep between us on the floor on the two backrest cushions the fit exactly in the gap!

We bought this van as a replacement for a brand new folding camper that we thought would be all we wanted, but we were so disappointed with all the work involved that we traded it in a year later for our Fleurette, we so wish we had bought it in the first place, but hey-ho, we all make mistakes!

We just love this van, the newer models are now called Trigano Silver, they are lovely but a bit out of our price range at the moment, so I shall continue to lust after them from afar!

Have a look at this web site,www.campersandleisure.co.uk,(sorry, can't get the link to work),this is where we bought our van, it's a long way from you but the web site will give you a lot of info about these vans.

Good luck with your hunting!

For a couple they are fine, much more comfy than tenting, we are selling our freedom as just not enough room in it for a family, no loo or hot water in ours either, but its the space that matters more to us. Don't think the door side matters so much, there are loads of continental vans about now, we have never had a problem.
