We have a brand new Adria van (got March!) & its only been out 3 times covering just a couple of hundred miles, including 120miles back from dealer in Davenrty. On returning from weekend away we unitched hubby pulled hand brake on & nearly lost his arm! We now have no hand brake & i'm assuming no brakes to the van17. As its new we thought (wrongly i'm told) it would be sorted under warrenty. It appears (so the dealer says) we have driven it with the handbrake on so its our fault, if this happened how did we managed to pull it on when we stopped? Also it appears that one wheel is heat damaged & the other not17 & i actualy saw wheels going round as hubby drove down the field surely if the handbrake was on the wheels shuldn't go round? Dealer tells us its designed to hold the van still not stop it being towed! But that aside i really dont no if its safe to tow in this state, we have tried loads of people locally (on the dealers say so) that do mobile servicing to come fix it but they wont touch it when you tell them how old it is! We have 2 weeks before our main holiday which is booked & paid for so need help urgently!!! Any ideas please.17

You will need to get an independent inspection done. This will need to be done by a reputable company, You may need this as evidence if you have to take the supplying dealer to court.

Has the dealer seen and inspected the van?

We also have a Adria and we love it. I seem to remember me pulling off with the handbrake on but I soon knew it was on when I changed gear i.e. first to second. The moment I put the clutch in the caravan brakes stopped the car. I had only done approx 10m so no damage done.

If you car has a manual transmission you would know about. I suppose you may not notice as much with an automatic as it changes are much quicker and the torque converter takes up the slack.

What type of car and gearbox do you have?

i think you would notice on an auto to, you cant go about sale of goods act yet until you have had it inspected, due to the fact youve used it a few times and the 120mile trip home, they will just say it was fine all that time so you must of been at fault, but once youve had it inspected and they say you were to blame or not then you can get heavy with them.

Mandi, firstly, if there is a failure in the handbrake linkage, which is what it sounds like, it doesn't mean you have no brakes, second if oh pulled up handbrake 'and nearly lost his arm' you couldn't have been running with the brake on. If there is heat damage on one side and not the other, it sounds like mal-adjustment in the first place which should have been picked up at the dealer's p.d.i.

I don't know whereabouts in kent you are but you might try, if you havn't already, www.premiercaravanservices.co.uk tel. 01227 712444 Trevor Powell

His workshop is at: Unit 47 Thomas Way, Lakesview International Business Park' Hersden, nr. Canterbury CT3  4JJ , thats the A28 Canterbury Thanet road.

Trevor is not a dealer, purely a caravan engineer and I'm sure he would give an appraisal for probably an hours labour charge with a written report if required. Might be worth a try as I think you are going to have a battle with the dealer, don't give up. Would even consider contacting Adria direct informing them of the prob and the attitude of the dealer. I know they are not built in this country but they must have a rep in the UK but even if you write to their overseas location they will have no language probs as a lot of their business is in the UK and I'm sure you'd get a response. I wish you luck and hope you can get it sorted, hope my input is of some help.....................Mick.

the dealers talking through his backside ,,the mechanics of the braking system are faulty causing the bowser cable to snap underneath ,,one side of the system is sticking ,,,as for towing with the handbrake on slightly causing rapid wear and brake drum failure it can happen easily... but the fault should have been spotted on the PDI  before handover and rectified
