Personally I like the A1, M25 and M3. A1 is certainly quieter than the M1, much less stressful when towing. There is a decent service station at Peterborough. Take the short cut at Hatfield and come onto the M25 at junction 22. The M25 is usually OK. M3 is generally pretty good. Last time I used the A34 it was very slow going due to the volume of traffic. Came back M25/A1 a couple of weeks ago from Dover, and most of the time I was on cruise control.
I know I will get shot down for this with choruses of "not the M25", but we've always found the going "steady", which is OK with a caravan on the back. I used to live close to that part of the M25, and never found it as bad as is sometimes made out, it is the rush hour periods during the week that are really bad.
