Hi all

We are off to York this weekend for two weeks, will be our first long holiday away in the van only had weekends away since caravanning for past two years (tent previous to that).

Has anyone been before, have any recommendations of places to visit? Will be staying about 3 miles outside the town.

Bearing in mind I am due our first baby in 7 weeks but am still fairly active! Did fancy the York Dungeon but I think it may make me go into prem labour!

rail museum,castle museum, jorvik ,dungeon,walk the walls,mcarthur glen designer outlet,cruises down the river,York minster,elvington air museum....loads of stuff to do in the area.lots of nice gentle riverside walks to do as well.

Thanks for that, did look at the Cruise but wasn't sure how good that would be. Quite fancy doing the steam train to Whitby one day as well.

We don't often do the sightseeing thing so want to avoid anything too boring if you know what I mean.

I would stay well clear of the dungeons if I were you.  I went a couple of years ago, and I am not joking, it was awful!!  I was terrified (I am a bit of a wuss  ), but it is very scary, and I would definately not recommend it in your condition.

The sightseeing bus tour is good.  You can hop on and off as many times as you like so it's good for a rest between stops

Have fun.  York is a beautiful city, and there's absolutely loads to do there.

York is one of our favourite locations.

Aswell as everything suggested above I would also suggest the bus tour of the city. We bought a ticket that let you jump on and off over 24 hours.

In easy driving of York there is also the Museum of Flight at Elvington, Eden Camp Museum Nr Malton and the Noth Yorkshire Moors Railway at Pickering. The villages of Pickering, Thorton Le Dale, Helmsley to the north are also worth a visit. as is Harrogate and Knaresborough to the west. All of the above are within about 25 miles from the city if you want to see the surrounding area as well.

Waterworld isn't a public pool, it is privately owned, we've never been but it is supposed to be really good.
You don't say if you already have children but Yorkmaze is really good if the weather is nice. Or for something a little different Dig is somewhere mine are after going.

The National railway museum, the Castle museum, the Yorkshire museum (in the museum gardens), the Minster, all fantastic places, although i am biased.
As said before the tour buses are good value (re-use the same ticket over 24hours) and you can hop on and off, also the Bar Walls are a good way to get around if you fancy a break from crowded streets (take care if it's wet though). The Quilt museum has some amazing work in if you like that type of thing.

Just out of York Beningbrough hall and gardens is nice, and further afield Castle Howard

There are tons of other places i could mention but maybe have a look here for some more ideas.

Edited: sorry i just noticed you said your first baby, but then again i wouldn't mind Dig & Yorkmaze myself

 

 

I live in York and would say you've got lots of the main things here...but can i be pedant and say Waterworld is actually publicly owned but leased to a private company!

The Walls are a must and free! You could do worse than get yourself a book called "The Snickelways of York", which is available in all book shops and gives you lots of little interseting routes around the city. I bought it and found my kids loved the walks

Whereabouts in York? You say 3 miles from the city...Bishopthorpe? If so eat at the Ebor which is Sam Smiths pub which means cheap beer and good food, I'd avoid the Marcia and The Woodman. If you are in Bishopthorpe it's also worth popping into the social club if you're a member of a club elsewhere.

Also if you're here for a while and able to travel ( Train,bus or car) get yourself over to the coast.

If you are staying at Naburn Lock then you can walk down to the river and get the boat into York and back.It's nice for a change. Also a bus stops near the gate I think.We often drove the car to the McArther Glen Outlet(2 minutes away) and used the Park and Ride.

I have often taken parties of school children to York and we spent a whole day enjoying what York has to offer. We started with a walk along the walls (from the castle end) and came off to visit the Railway Museum(free). We had our lunch there. Then we  crossed over the river(turn left just past the bridge) and visited York Museum gardens. We then walked  to the Shambles, then on to visit the Castle Museum and finally Jorvik Viking Museum.They loved it but it has become more expensive these days with the admission charges.My favourite is still the Castle Museum, good for a rainy day.

York is a beautiful place to visit.  It's only about an hour away from us so we go for day trips and also away in the caravan for long weekends (school holidays permitting!). As mentioned already there are plenty of places worth visiting but you defintely must allow plenty of time for a good look around the town and all it has to offer.  Take advantage of the Park and Ride facilities.  The parking in York itself is a bit of a nightmare!  If you like fish and chips go to the Wetherby Whaler. Lovely fish and chips.  Someone recommended it to me whist I was was waiting for a free shower at the Beechwood Grange site.
