Does anyone know exactly how caravan insurers (Caravan Club in particular) work out no claims discounts? Is it only full years which count, or can you accumulate periods of less than 12 months?
I have held caravan insurance off and on since 2003:
2 years and 3 months, then one month gap
5 months, then six months gap
1 year and 1 month, then four month gap
and finally! 6 months
So am I entitled to three or four years no claims discount?
my guess is it would depend on the company you are insuring with.
with car insurance it usually has to be continuous and they do ask for evidence of your NCD up front.....although i know that having a break in insurance is common on motorcyles (lay up for winter) and they account for this and allow breaks, but again evidence up front.
do caravan insurers ask for evidence....or do we have to assume that this is something you have to prove at the time of a claim?

I don't think the CC no claims bonus works like car insurance. Its only having been with the CC that you start getting the no claims discount, you can't transfer anything from another insurer. However you retain the CC no claims if you buy a new van and keep their insurance.
when ever I have taken out a new policy for the caravan, I have usually said how many years I have had a caravan and how many years without a claim, and the insurers have usually given me discount accordingly, I have never had to submit proof of length of insurance.

'my caravan insurance is nearly twice the cost of my car insurance , yet i use my car every day , and the caravan about once a month all year '
Thats true and with catsthe premiums are so high because of the high crash statistics of young male drivers and also the cost of collisions involving people with no insurance. Caravan insurance should be a lot less than car insurance.
Well, it looks like the CC will have my business again. Caravanguard wouldn't even quote unless I fitted additional security. Above the usual hitchlock and wheel
clamp they wanted at least another wheel clamp but preferably an alarm. I already explained to them that the van is kept out of sight at the rear of my garden, in sight of the house, behind padlocked gates, in a very awkward spot to get in amd out of and the garden is protected by PIRs, which when they pick up movement turn on two floodlights and set off audible alarms in the house - one in kitchen, lounge and two bedrooms!
