I'm nervous of towing our large caravan although after my OH hurt his knee & I had to take over recently I have decided that its not as bad as I thought, but is that just me being daft or do other Ladies who don't tow very much feel the same way?
Should we Ladies all be towing our vans as confidently as the men do?
If so why don't we??
My OH towed our van for the first time in April this year. She done really well although most was on dual carriageway . I was in the front telling her to keep looking in the extended mirrors not the car ones, which she found hard. Still, after one mile she stopped & let me take over....only joking , she drove for about 10miles which was really good considering she hadn't towed before & it was all in one piece still. Loves ya really Happycamper!!!
------------- I'm just a slave to the outdoor life!!!!!!!

not female but will give you support lol, if you are lacking in confidence do a cc course
mate (female) tows a blinking big compass with a sorento and that is a big rig, physically in towing there is no reason why a girlie cant tow as well as a guy, the cars have pas and abs etc, you can use the mirrors. you go girl!!!
Thanks for the replies, I had to tow our outfit which is a big Burstner van & 4x4 from M69 down to the Cotswolds so I know I can do it if OH sits next to me!
Next wk going to France maybe a bit trickier and I refuse point blank to drive it on or off the ferry! Lol.
I have done a CC towing course so its obviously just nerves but I really can't get to grips with reversing it as it is so not logical steering the wrong way to where you want to go so I don't now either he does or its unhitched & we use the mover!
Come on girls tell me that you attempt to tow too!
OH towed ours for the first time a couple of weeks ago. We picked a good stretch of road going to Yarmouth. She really enjoyed the experience, even going round roundabouts, tho i was left to tow it onsite lol. Our caravan is 22 fott long so would say to anyone, have a go. If its the 1st time start off on an easy stretch and go from there. As Alan says there are plenty of courses available.
My Wife has only towed once..My Pa in laws Coachman/ volvo rig a few years ago...she found it too nerve racking...and so prefers me to tow...which incidently I love.so that works out nicely...Theres no reason you Ladies shouldn't give towing a try.....just take your time...and watch your mirrors.....after all If you can cope with more than one pan on the stove at once ( now thats really hard )..you should find towing easy..........Its true..no sexist comments intended.............Go for it Girls
hi im a woman and ive towed the caravans weve had past and present, in many different sizes. i also when needed tow a horse trailer. the caravans easier tho! though there both not to bad, and when youve drove for about 10 mins you get used to it and wonder why youve never done it before. trailer is v heavy when its got 2 horses in tho, and you have to be xtra carefull when braking and going up and downhill as they need time to get ready to brace themseleves when your slowing down
I'm going to tow next weekend for the 1st time. We are off to Scotland so i will have to take a turn. I have asked if i could have a go at towing but dh isn't too keen on the idea but even he knows that i will have to next weekend. I towed the tt 2 years ago but never a caravan lol. It will all be motorway towing that i will be doing so shouldn't be too hard but not sure i will "forget" that the 'van is on the back like dh does lol.
Hi I have towed trailers and caravans that we have owned over the pass 12years. My OH can read a map much better than I ever could so it has always been a done thing that I tow and he gets us there. I have never had a problem towing, though once we got to a site and the warden did tell my OH to get in and park up the van - I was sat in the drivers seat at the time! ' Don't worry my wife will sort it mate' my OH said. The warden didn't know where to look. Yes we Ladies should be towing our vans as confidently as the men. My advice would be have a go, if your comfortable towing then go girl!
Lots of female towers on this forum. Some of them single parents who tow solo or with family. We both tow (2 women) and have both done the CC course and we know 2 other all female couples and both have their own vans. You see plenty of women around here towing huge horse trailers as we live near 2 livery stables. I always think it must be more daunting towing one of them with valuable livestock stood up inside.
I tow ours and I tow the horses in their trailer. I must admit I prefer it when Mike does it as I do find it a bit stressful, but the more I do it the more confident I feel about doing it
OH has towed since the 60's & still takes a turn on every trip to keep her hand in. Was very useful in the past for long drives to the New Forest etc when she would do a couple of 2 hour shifts - always overnight.
I've shared the towing ever since we started caravanning 19 years ago. I can't really see what the big deal is. If you can drive a car you can tow a caravan. It's all common sense really. I've never understood why it should be assumed that men do the towing.
