There's been a similar thread here recently regarding the madness seen on the roads. They range from similar to Yankyvan's story, speeding on the motorway (yes, the towing limit on motorways IS 60mph) to imported Hobby's being towed by non-commercial.

There's been quite an increase in new-to-towing drivers over recent years and you only have to check some of the questions posed on here and other forums to realise that some folk simply don't have a clue (but ask the questions first), and those who are just plain ignorant and have no idea there's legislation relating to towing.
A question posed on another forum recently (pasted word for word)...
"I've just bought a Bailey Senator twin axle, can I tow it safely with my 55 Fiesta?"

Not good yankyvan, he was an accident waiting to happen and your intervention was vital in doing that.  What an offhand response to be given eh?

Sad to say there are still people out there towing caravans, who think that once they have a towbar fitted that gives them the right to tow any caravan no matter how much it weighs, I only hope that I dont come into contact with them or there caravan as result of there stupidness.

the trouble is....this lad who was driving this looked to be about 21 ish, and probably thought he was doing nothing wrong.....scares me really as i push 44 tonnes up and down the road every day and if i had someone like in front of me who doesnt know what they are doing and it all goes wrong and i hit them....who`s to blame ?......some people may not what i am going to say here but...i still think all people towing caravans or even large trailers should have to sit some sort of test, when you think the some outfits on the road foe example a sprinter van with a large twin axle van and the back is not far off as long as my artic, and i am sure there are some very compitant drivers on here but then you get the ones who have never towed in there life.sorry but thats just my opinion and its not meant to offend anybody !!

Hi I'm new here

We have 2 cars in our house, One's a Ford Galaxy but i'm much more comfortable driving my little N reg Fiesta, i'm thinking of getting a tow bar fitted and towing our Bailey Ranger GT60 540/6 with it.  Do you think if i stayed quite local up to an hours drive away my little Fiesta could tow with it.  Sorry i don't know the car's kerbweight or the caravan's weight but my dealer said it was ok and i'm sure it will be...

Only joking, lol

Every member on here is perfect except me. I can remember in the early 70's buying a Mardon Classique and taking the familly ( 2 +3) down to Newquay using a Austin 1300. The car started making groaning noises by the time we got to Plymouth but it was holiday time so on we went. Got to the site and spent a week worrying about the odd noises that the car was making but decided that it would then be ok to drive back (I just turned the radio on louder). The car literally blew up near Dobwalls leaving cogs on the road. I then went to the nearest garage and bought an old Hillman Husky Estate which cost £40 and then had the tow bar welded on.

On the way back the old Husky did the trip fine with the speedo showing that we were travelling somewhere between 20 & 50 all the way back (The needle just waved around whatever speed we did). I was aware that the brakes were suspect so I left a very large gap between me and the car in front. The wife wasnt too impressed  with the Husky as the front passenger seat collapsed on her. I made her sit in the back with one of the sprogs sat in the pushchair that was placed where the front seat had been.

Since then I think I have become a slightly better tourer and am always aware that there are other idiots on the road like I used to be.

Pop top man's post shows how times and atitudes have changed of the last 30 or so years.

Now I am aware that I have an outfit that is close on 40' long and weighing in excess of 3.5 T fully laden.  I am grateful that I do not need to take a B+E test, but I fully understand the need for one.  It scares me that legally the Mother in Law could hire a 7.5 T lorry and drive up and down the country in it.

Before anyone jumps on me for being sexist, she would be the first to admit that her driving is not that confident and most other members of my family (OH included) have driven large Transit type vans so the difference would not be as servere as the step up from an Agila.
