We have a fully monitored Phantom tracker on our caravan. It works with the alarm, so if the alarm goes off, it triggers the Tracker, but it will also be triggered if it is disconnected from the alarm, or disconnected from its own power supply. It's nice to know that someone is effectively 'watching' out 'van when it's in storage.
To operate it, we just have to arm the alarm system. It stays active then until the alarm is dis-armed. If/when we want to change the battery, we have to ring Phantom as disconnecting the battery triggers the Tracker, but it's a quick 30-second phone call and the people answering the phone are always friendly (even if you trigger the alarm by accident, they never give you the impression you are causing them hassle when they talk to you).
I'll admit it wasn't a cheap system (around £500 for installation, plus the first year monitoring, then I think we paid about £400 for 5 years' monitoring (you can pay yearly, but there's a discount for 5 years up-front), although you can have a 'passive' system where you have to tell them your 'van isn't where is should be and they use the Tracker to find it which is cheaper), but we thought it a small price to pay to protect our £12,000 investment.
