can anyone out there tell me what tyre pressure i should have in my tyre's the size of tyre is 165/13

You need to look in your caravan's manual as this will give the recommended pressure.

hi, i have the same size tyres and in my handbook it advise,s 54psi fully loaded,but have it confirmed at your local tyre depot.

165x13 what? after these numbers you will find the load index number and a speed index letter.

You can ignore the letter as it will alway represent a speed faster than you will be towing! however the load index number defines what type of tyre you have and how much load it can carry.

Armed with that information and the weight of your van, you should find the correct tyre pressure as well as much more here or for older tyre types perhaps here

PS, another important number written on the side of the tyre is it's age, you will find out where it is on the first 'here' website above, age should never be older than 7 years and preferably 5 years

Hi Gary

Found your link invaluable. Have had some concerns about my caravan tyres. The van is just over a year old and has the original fit tyres. When moving it on the drive there is a rubbing sound as the tyres rub against the alloy rims.

The tyres are 185/70 R13, with a max load of 530kg, and a max pressure of 36psi as stated on the tyre.

The load index matches exactly the 530kg per tyre. On 1060Kg per axle, my caravan fully laden weight is 1000Kg, and allowing for 75kg nose weight, this puts the axle loading as 95kg, just in the safe area.

The handbook states that pressure should be 45psi, 9psi higher than the max stated on the tyre and the guide. This is what I have been running the tyres at, and as I say, they still look soft.

Are my above sums correct, and should I be challenging the dealer over this.

There is certainly a problem as you should not be running them at a higher pressure than stated on the tyre, plus on the move, you can forget deducting the nose weight, that only applies while the vans stood still.

I would be asking the manufacturer what size/type tyres should be fitted? particularly to warrant the 45psi stated?

The nearest would be the 175R13C commercial tyre with a load index of 97 from thissimilar but later list.
This tyres is an 80% aspect ratio so will be just about the same diameter of those fitted but slightly narrower

That's useful about the nose weight, because it puts it in the danger zone. The tyres are the original ones fitted by the manufacturer. Its a special low profile ALKO chassis with shock absorbers not a standard one common on most vans

Does this make any difference?

hi wizard this gives a load index of 86 on the tyre from the inf provided from the thread earlier.

thus meaning they are enoughh but as gart has given sound advice if the tyre is rubbing on the alloy rim call me dense but i dont under stand how it would be rubbing on the rim???? but i would definetly be changing to 175 13 cas then you would be well over rated and not pushing the limit of your weight.

car tyresim afraid get them off  as i said they are within the limits but you would be much better off with a higher rated tyre or gt and avon make your size tyre is trailer only n rated but as it is a  caravan this will be fine they are off top of my head 106-104 n more than enough at the lowest rating  of 104 is 900kg per tyre there are 2 ratings one for single tyre one for duel ie like an artic in pairs next to each other ... sorry to bore you

I am certainly going to have to change them (2 and the spare), but do I have any comeback on the dealer, as they are original fit?

Obviously the van handbook is wrong, and this needs addressing by the manufacturer..

Rubbing on the rim: as the tyre moves slowly on the (level) drive the tyre sidewall flexes out against the bead of the alloy rim and you can hear it too, though there are no marks evident on the sidewall.

god that sounds bad i have only ever seen this on flat tyres and as you have done that i would be changing them even though you are having higher rated tyres keep pressure the same as book says and the stiffer wallls  will take up the sag in the walls as they are commercial tyres u could even up the pressure not sure to the exact figures for these tyres as i am at home not at work lol!! not that you would guess the way im rattling on on average 65 is around the max al though some are much higher and some lower i hope this is of some help to you dealers im afraid will say they are within there limits i would guess but worth atry doont get me started on dealers i have my own thread alll about mine at the minute
