Hello all,

We are currently thinking of upgrading our tents and joining the tin tenters. We have been offered a 2 berth Buccaneer Elan 15 Cira 1990-95 that is mint condition and we really like it. I have been learning about the MAM,s and kerb weights and the 85% rule. I think I have got my head around the Licience ruling with regards gaining mine after 1997, and I cant tow with a combine wieght of above 3.5t etc.

However, i cant find out much about the caravan itself, reviews etc. And also its weight. With the paper work for the van there is instructions for all the appliances and fixtures etc. Paper work from the dealer, but no actuall log book/manual for the van.

Is it a good make/model, and where could I get some specs for the van itself?

Many thanks

Hello Daly,
I'm afraid I only know of one site that holds data of most models (mines too old to be on there as well ) Anyway, the references to the 2 berth Buccaneer Elan go back to 2000. Seems they are all about 1287 kg, unladen. The link to the Buccaneer page: Buccaneer Data

That's not true. Here's a link to the appropriate page at Direct.gov, where it defines category B as:

Motor vehicles with a MAM not exceeding 3500kg having not more than eight passenger seats with a trailer up to 750kg.

Combinations of towing vehicles in category B and a trailer, where the MAM of the combination does not exceed 3500kg and the MAM of the trailer does not exceed the unladen mass of the towing vehicle.
IOW, in addition to solo cars and trailers up to 750kg, your wife can drive any car/van and trailer combination where:
  • The MTPLM of the trailer is no greater than the unladen weight of the towcar; and

  • The MAM of the towcar added to the MTPLM of the trailer does not exceed 3,500 kg.
HTH,

Geoff
