We are travelling down the A303 from Basingstoke to Honiton in a few weeks time, and I know all you seasoned travellers will know the answer.

Are there any decent services that we can stop at that we will get our caravan into? I'm concerned that most places won't have space to park a car and caravan.

Steve.

Hi Steve, there is a good Somerfield Services at Amesbury just off A303 you can't miss it,also a good snack van with toilets between A350 turn off and Mere, but all the Services on A303 have ample parking.

You could do Basingstoke to Honiton in one hit it's only 110 miles But if you really need to stop there was a nice Cafe/Toilet place on the roundabout where the A303 meets the A3088 just outside Yeovil Plenty of room as there is provision for trucks to park If you just want a stop to stretch your legs there are plenty of lay-bys with a verge between you and the road (I know I've slept in most of them)Hope the helps Steve

I would love to do it in one hit but my 4yr old boy suffers from Aspergers, not only does he get quite bad travel sickness (which rules out DVD's), he would also go stir crazy!

Thanks for all the replies, it's a big help.

Steve.

I'd agree with Ali - Cartgate is the biggest on that route. However, it's fairly close to Yeovil and only about 30 miles from Honiton. So it hardly seems worthwhile to pull in there since it's so close to your destination.

Probably closer to midway for you would be the "chew and choke" a few miles west of Chicklade. After the climb out of Chicklade (which is ten or twelve miles west of Stonehenge) there's a level stretch of road with an Esso garage and Little Chef at the end. A few hundred yards further on is a pull in that HGVs use, usually with enough space for a caravan. There's a "burger hut" there, or you can drop the steadies and have a brew. At about fifty miles from Basingstoke, it's about half way.

If the above is full, carry on down the hill and then continue for a few miles. A mile or two before Mere, there's a large pull-in/layby on the left. The entrance isn't too obvious, so not many use it. However, provided the Highways Agency haven't filled it with heaps of chippings, you should be able to pull in there for a brew.

HTH,

Geoff

The burger hut one you describe Geoff can become really busy this time of year though so depending on the size of your unit you may not fit in.  AFAIK the other one near Mere is still open, it was 2 weeks ago when I came back from an appointment that way.  Just a little further on past Wincanton at Sparkford there is a garage on the roundabout with a shop and also a McDonalds but not overly spacious for caravans.

Cartgate does still have the cafe yes, actually back in the winter we had brekkie there one morning on the way out for the day just for a change.  Typical cafe food, not particularly good quality but perfectly edible.
