Hi we are off to pentewan sands next week, and previously we have gone through the bottle neck into cornwall, however my hubby thinks it may be a good idea to stay on A38 and use taymar bridge,

is it suitable for caravans, and is it too hilly that way

thanks in anticipation

It is hilly but it is the West Country lol so you won't escape them.  I think it is a more direct route for South Cornwall than the A30 but tbh, this time of year, if you head this way traffic is a fact of life so whether you will gain is in the lap of the Gods.

The A38 is fine for caravans - I use it regularly. However, it is a toll bridge and will cost you the princely sum of two pounds eastbound (crossing westbound is free). Thankfully, the big bottleneck at Dobwalls is gone now that the bypass has opened, so it's probably now a quicker route between Exeter and St Austell than the A30.

Geoff

We went that way a few weeks ago and found no problems at all on the A38. The country roads to get to the site (we went to Looe CC site) were slightly more interesting for us on our third ever trip but we managed fine. I love the way its free to get into Cornwall over the bridge but they charge you to get out again!

Have a great holiday

If I'm bringing the van back to Cornwall I always go on the A38. Being a tight git (my wifes words!) I use the A30 to exit Cornwall. (It saves me a couple of quid)

I have just come back from Sennan near Lands End today,(I live 20 mins from the bridge) Having got caught up in the bottle neck near Bodmin I decided to pull off and come back on the A38. No problems at all! I arrived home in about 35mins. The good Mrs P who was a mile further along the road in her car didn't get back for a good hour after I arrived at home. There was hardly any traffic in either direction on the A38. Enjoy your holiday!

I work for highways and always recommend the A38 as at this time of year there will be a tailback westbound atthe end of the dual carraigeway at Temple and like eastbound at the end of the Bodmni by pass east bound EVERY DAY!! We are not allowed to advise you you to use the A38 on the electronic sign west of bodmin ,only to say queues likely. I often take my van via the A390 to St Austell with no problem the only slow point being the hill out of lostwithiel but who's in a hurry anyway?.Going to pentewen sands that way is definatelythe easiest way to go

as you are going to the east side of cornwall its the best way there is,whats a couple of quid for the toll its saves money going round, and when you go over the T/bridge take a camara and take a picky of the I,K,Brunell train bridge its a great piece of engineering, you wont be disapointed with this way to ST.Austall.

One small point....  it is TAMAR not Taymar.... 17

Put Taymar into your sat nav and you could be off to spain!!

The only Massive hill will be at Holden on the A38 after Exeter...

If the OP is taking the A390 from Dobwalls to St Austell, that isn't the case. The A390 is like a switchback. The climb out of Lostwithiel is much steeper than Haldon Hill. It's not as long, but you can't overtake until you're almost at the top. So if there's a very slow HGV at the head of the queue (which happens regularly), the traffic will be stop/start most of the way up. I suspect that hill accounts for more dead clutches than does Haldon!

In that case, might I remind you of the stonking great hill at Dean Prior, and also the one at Ivybridge (Endsleigh Garden Centre).

Also once you're over the Tamar Bridge there's the climb from the Saltash Tunnel to the Carkeel Roundabout, the steep hill from Notter Bridge to Landrake, the long hill at Menheniot, and the long climb up to the new roundabout at Dobwalls.

It really doesn't matter which way you go since almost all roads in Devon and Cornwall are hilly.

I've used that way many times but I prefer going via the A30, both ways have their fair share of hills. I just go through early or late to miss the bottleneck. I took my family & our van down last weekend & we went through there about 0745ish, the traffic had just started slowing but kept flowing nicely through.

Pentewan have had good weather so far this week, my family are down there now. Where are you going to be on the site?

Another small point if you put in Holden you will be further off route as it is in Australia its Haldon Hill on the A3817

It is also worth using the A38 if it is windy, as this is much more sheltered route than the open hills of Dartmoor. I've had to come off the A30 twice and cut down through Tavistock when the wind has been particularly strong, so now if it is windy near Exeter I always take the A38 and rejoin the A30 at Bodmin. Then the only big, windy hill is 'Hamburger Hill' near Indian Queens..........hope the spelling is ok
