I am so cross at caravan owners on the motorway!!...M4, M5 and M25

We have just driven from Devon up to North London on Sat and returned on Sunday.

On Sat we saw 2 flipped caravans on the M5 and I mentioned to the hubby that I wondered how it could have happened??  We then decided to watch the speed and control of drivers towing caravans.

We were overtaken by at least 10 people towing caravans and we were doing 70 mph. The vans were swerving and we saw on 5 occassions, vans nearly missing traffic in the fast lane!

The speed limit I thought was 60mph for towing a van? Correct me if I am wrong.

People were towing large vans with very small cars and in one instance we saw an elderly gentleman towing a van with a small dog sat on his lap!!

On the way back down to Devon we were cut up twice by towers who didn't even indicate before they pulled out in front of us doing at least 70mph!!

No wonder accidents happen with caravans.

Is this normal or were we just unlucky??

Unfortunately at this time of the year and on those roads bad driving is common.
It's not just people towing, although bad driving whilst towing just magnifies the stupidity!

There are some idiots out there im afraid who give all caravaners a bad name. All car accidents are horrible to view, but its very sad when a caravan overturns and its contents are spewed all over the road.

As a caravan owner I was like you very upset when travelling down to Devon in July to see so many caravans been towed to fast....OH stuck to 55 on the motorway and I lost count of how many vans passed us.... some just rushed passed us it was very frightening to watch... I said to OH 'why are they in such a rush?'

It is just so sad that some give everyone a bad name,

we witnessed a bad accident on the A47 in norfolk yeasterday,  one drivers stupidity has ruined 2 families holidays.

we were in a que of traffic and as soon as we reached the duel carriage way  the second caravan in the que ( an older twin axle being towed by a peugeot estate ) decided to try and over take the car and caravan in front who were doing the 55 limit.

as the tow car drew level with the front of the caravan he was overtaking one of his caravan tyres blew out! the peugeot car hit the front of the caravan he was overtaking, his caravan side swiped it then the whole overtaking unit jackknifed and ended up in the central reservation!

there were bits of car and caravan spread all over the road, luckily in a couple of minutes all the passengers were out sitting on the road looking ok so we just drove on by as several other cars were stopping.

one minutes sillyness had just ruined 2 families holidays as at 1pm on a saturday i bet they were heading to the norfolk coast on holiday.

I live in the area of the M5 M42 M40 & M6 & have lost count on how many times each motorway has been stationary with over turned caravans.

I too wondered why & came to the conclusion that speed was the cause as i too had caravans passing me as if  i was doing 40mph when in fact i was doing 60mph.

SO ALL I CAN SAY IS SLOW DOWN IF YOU DON'T WISH TO END UP IN THE SAME WAY. & IF YOUR IN THAT MUCH OF A HURRY SET OUT EARLIER & GET TO YOUR DESTINATION IN ONE PIECE.

Oh dear, let me assure you that the majority of caravan owners are not that irresponsible!

We always stick to the speed limits, indeed often 5-10 miles below, and are frequently "cut up" by cars either cutting in in front of us to leave the road, or charging out in front of us.

It is really scarey!

I look forward to the day when there are more nationwide caravan/car roadside checks during the holiday season , there needs to be a some prosecutions to make people buck there ideas up and be more responsible when towing

I find it hard to get my head round this one when you're complaining of other people going too fast when you have wrote :-

We were overtaken by at least 10 people towing caravans and we were doing 70 mph. The vans were swerving and we saw on 5 occassions, vans nearly missing traffic in the fast lane!

The speed limit I thought was 60mph for towing a van? Correct me if I am wrong.

You're saying that you were doing 70 m.p.h. so are you not as bad as the others when you were also breaking the speed limit. ????

I don't think she was towing a caravan!

I dont think Angel-weeps said they were towing but were aware of others who were towing in excess of the 70mph that they were travelling at.

I was on the M6 in Cheshire last week (without the van) and, along with a lot of others, waited for more than a few miles behind a car/caravan, (2 adults, 2 kids, and a load of gear), doing just over 60mph.

Now before you all start shouting at me for being impatient, this outfit was in the outside lane!

After we eventually past him, looking back, there he was again, yes, back in the outside lane!

I wonder if the boys in blue caught him?

Perhaps if you had taken the time to read my post correctly.......I do not tow a caravan.. I was driving my car at the correct speed limit on the motorway of no more than 70mph.......and I was being overtaken by caravan drivers.

Laws are only any good if there are people available and willing to enforce them.

Perhaps a little less spent on speed cameras and a little more on actual policing.
