With refard to Ian-Albions remark on Page two about vehicles overtaking caravans when they wouldn't pass solo cars.

I agree with your comments and have been the subject of numerous occasions of the kami Kaze squad myself but;

I was mentioning your post to SWMBO the other day and she reminded me that I don't like following white van man on the Motorways. Its not that I have anything against them. It's just that, with the huge expanse of white wall in front of you, it is difficult to see the traffic travelling in front of the van and it would be the same if one was following a caravan.

It doesn't excuse the dangerous stunts solo drivers make but it may help to explain the action they make.

Travelled on the M62 this morning, going East. Between Bradford and Leeds I overtook a caravan in the middle lane doing 70mph for a number of miles.All right it was overtaking traffic in the inside lane but that speed is not safe. If you drive a large black vehicle and tow a Rialto 640 then slow down, not only for your own safety but that of other road users as well.

What about defective tyres on a caravan? Surely the biggest caravan killer out there!

And over loaded vans

And inexperienced drivers

And badly matched outfits

And NO TOWING MIRRORS!!!!!!

75% of all caravans I see are behind tow vehicles with NO TOWING MIRRORS FITTED.

Message to Jeepster and Whiterosesom

Oh Dear!

In my message earlier, at no point did I suggest or imply that I go too close to the back of 'white van man'.

I merely pointed out that 'the huge expanse of white wall' is something that I do not like being behind. Experience has told me that, no matter how far back you go "on a Motorway" (my words), you would have difficulty in seeing the poor sod 3ft from his front bumper. I would add that factually, a "huge expanse of white wall" does not diminish in size when you increase the distance between you and it. It remains the same size. Only the perception changes.

Furthermore, at no time did I suggest that in attempting to 'Help to explain" the errant actions of those that overtake the dreaded Caravan was in someway supporting those of the Kami Kaze school overtaking.

My text does not suggest this but is put forward in order that those who wonder why they do it, do it?  

suddenly everyone is a perfect driver and can be a critic you dont want to know the mistakes i have made and i drive a truck and have done for 20 years so until i am perfect i wont judge

Is it correct that even though the national limit for lorries on motorways & dual carriageways is 60mph, many are fitted with governors to limit their speed to some limit set by the fleet operators. So we end up with lorries limited to anything between approx 54mph to 60mph.

If so, it's little wonder there is so much congestion, with one lorry limited to 56mph travelling behind one at 54mph. No wonder they want to overtake.

I always want to overtake with my caravan because I want to travel at 60mph, but most lorries are doing less.

Ah Ha, just wait until we all have those tiny electric cars with a range of two feet.Londons air will be ok and we will all be in the pub cause we cant go anywhere.

That should get the conversation going ;-}

When I put "it is your own bad driving"

I didn't mean you exactly but all the people who do get too close to what is in front be it too close to vans, lorries, cars, etc. which in my experiance is that more get too close than stay further behind to get a better view of whats further in front.
