We are looking to downgrade from a folding camper to a 4/5 berth van (just kidding on the downgrade bit :) )

We are hoping to have 3 kids sleeping in either a second awning, annexe or bedroom pods, the thing that bothers me is that the pictures i see of bunks have no bed guards on, do they normally have guards because if not i can guarantee the kids in the van WILL fall out, Any help or advice appreciated. We have the camping bug and think that with the option of a 2nd awning and/or annexes/pods a van will accomodate the 7 of us better.

Many thanks

Cliff

Hi.
We looked at a really nice Swift 6 berth yesterday, at Canwell (not far from you). That had a triple bunk & they had bed guards. Perfect layout & had I £13k to spend I'd have bought it...

Failing that we use a folding bed guard for our little boys. Didnt stop the eldest from falling out one night though.

We have a Pageant S7 with the rear triple bunks.

The top bunk has a fixed rail, the middle one has a removable rail similar to the side dinette bunks and the bottom bunk is on the floor so no need for a rail.  On our model the ladder is fixed so that works a restraint to the middle and lower bunks too.

I have never seen any bunks for awnings though, our bedroom pod takes a double bed (just) rather than a bunk.

I ma not sure about having a 2nd awning on the other side of the van as it will make the van too wide for the fire separation rule and I am sure the club sites (and the commercial sites I have been to recently) will not allow it.

We have slept 8 (4 adults and 4 kids) over Easter in our six birth van with an awning with bedroom pod.  With that many bodies I would invest in a full size awning with an extra pod rather than fitting an internal bedroom annexe.

A bed guard is a really good option I know we use to use one ages ago as they kids kept falling out of the beds.  Not all bunks are fixed and a van we use to have was old and you wouldnt know about the bunk until u asked as it wasnt obvious on first looking.

Kepp looking Cliff, you will find one your happy with

We have a 1998 Crown regent, it will sleep 3 kids at one end on a double and a bunk over which has side panels.

Our 99 Ranger 510/4 has a bed guard which is still in the cupboard at home unused.

It a big metal thing combined with a ladder, but as our lad was 12 he didn't need it.
