Am I mad booking a week in the Lakes for the October school hols with our tourer, on a site with food, shop and play area.  Taking two kids (not including the hubbie!).  With the dark nites what do we do of an evening and what if it pees it down all week - are we wasting our time and stress levels!  PS love this website for help and info.17

we do have some nice days up here in October. Get into a good site though - like Skelwith Fold if you want peace and quiet but with a good kids play area, nice shop, clean loos etc.

Last October half term (and christmas) we were in Scarborough - as said above the weatther was cold and frost but lovely. This October we are going to CC Meahtop Fell near Barrow, south Lakes. Can't wait and then back to Scarborough on Boxing Day until after new year! Didn't have much rain on either trip but at Christmas we bought a TV which was a god send for the dark nights.

My kids go out to play all day, rain, sun or frost on park equipment.  Snowed in May and ours just played away.  We just take wellies and waterproof trousers with us and they are happy as larry in the cold or rain.   When it comes down dark, we just have plenty of DVD's etc and go for family walks in the dark as we choose sites near towns when it is early dark nights, play games, go to cinema etc etc, eat late so as to make the  most of the day etc etc.

Have fun in October.

first year of caravanning and my OH is determined to get her moneys worth out of the van every year.  Thats why we have booked to go in the october break to eyemouth (stuff for kids to do during the day).  We will be going away between xmas and new year, and we are hoping its snows.

Our 2 boys (6,3) are mad for all things messy and if it rains we put wellies and coats on, head to the beach and dig around the rock pool.  The boys love being outside.

Anyway I hope have a nice break, I and actually looking forward to ours and whilst we like the rain I do hope it is dry...

Cheers

Richard

We were away last week of July when it rained torrentially & still had a great time - just take good waterprrofs/wellies & go out anyway!  It's also good to look at what else is in the area for rainy days - swimming pool, cinema etc...

We've also been in April when it was still quite cold (but gorgeous) & again, just take appropriate clothing.  We found a small fan heater in the awning meant we could still sit out etc...

I love October - weather has been lovely the last couple of years & we'll also be making the most of it in the caravan (going to Marton Mere near Blackpool as we haven't seen the Lights for years).

we always go to the Ullswater Caravan, Camping and Marine Park (UCCMP) for that week in october and really enjoy it. they always have a special offer on for that week, you can check prices, availability and book on their website. we go with 2 kids, 2 dogs and there are loads of good walks (take wellies). the october week is probably my favourite week away of the year as it was the first time we went when we first bought a van. ahhh, fond memories!! (never towed before, no idea how a caravan "worked", even less idea about weights, loading, speed limits etc!! bought caravan at 2.30pm and went to the lakes at 4.30pm!!) i know, not big and not clever, and wouldnt do it again!

so, october school holiday week? i would miss the rest of the year for this week if i had to.

regards,

simon.

Take a TV with DVD player for later on in the evenings.  Earlier evening play card/board games.  We take skipbo and uno and play them forever lol.  Cluedo, monopoly and battleships are good to play too.  Take loads of extra clothes and towels cos the kids will get wet and muddy.

Check that the heater works in your 'van and i'm sure you will have a wonderful time, that's why you have a caravan instead of a tent so that you can go away in the winter month's lol
