Sorry if this has been asked before but we have been offered a caravan from a dealer and, because we wanted a motor mover, they offered to move one which is nearly new from a van they have in , and fit it to the van we are interested in. We are quite interested as the price is good but were wondering if the guarantee on the motor mover is transferable or not. There's nothing on Powrtouch website and we can't phone them until Monday.
(I was thinking about the non-transferable warranty issues I have read about with Bailey's.)

Thanks for any info

We have a Powrtouch mover.  I believe the warranty is transferable when it is moved from your outgoing van to your new one.  I doubt that Powrtouch would transfer a warranty for a unit that has been sold on by a dealer, and any such warranty/part warranty would probably be up to the dealer to honour.  The dealer should be able to advise you of the situation, and should have some knowledge of Powrtouch's policy in this respect.

Failing a satisfactory reply from the dealer, your best option is to contact Powrtouch themselves for a definitive answer.  We have found the unit to be reliable, but there is always the off-chance of a problem in even the highest quality products, and replacement items are not always cheap.

what it really comes down to is a direct comparison of cost:

Van price + used mover price + (fitting?) + warranty left on mover  as opposed to, Van price + supply and fit price of new mover + 5-yr. warranty.

You may find the second option to be better,  particularly if the overall cost of having the used mover is only marginally less, and the warranty position is tenuous.

It is always wise to consider that aftersales customer service is more likely to be better for a new unit from Powrtouch, than a secondhand one that has been sold on through the trade.

Bertie.

Powrtouch will transfer a warranty, provided the mover in question is still within warranty. If you send them the serial numbers, they will confirm for you weather it is still within warranty. They do charge an admin fee for doing this. I don't remember what it was but do recall that it was a bit steep, particularly if the warranty period is not very long. Try giving them a ring or sending them an email, they are very good to deal with.

Of course, if you buy a new Powertouch without paying for a warranty, you get your rights under the sale of goods act

I'm on my hobbyhorse, because I always think that paying for extended warranties on anything is money down the drain, particularly on things which are both simple and used very little (like movers). Of course you may think different

You don't pay for the 5 year warranty with Powrtouch though this is their standard warranty. However if you are pricematching for something with a 3 year warranty I have read that they charge to extend to beyond that. I suppose it is sort of understandable that if they have a product that will last for 5 years and the competitors product only lasts for 3 then you are not price matching like for like, but I certainly wouldn't pay extra for the remaining two years of the warranty on something that they by their own admission by giving a 5 year warranty should not break down for at least 5 years. Powrtouch have also been known on many occasions to repair for free even outside the warranty period.

Thanks LDKO, I think it's just a bit of neat marketing on Powertouch's part to give an extra 2 years.

I'd think that the chances of ANY mover actually going wrong between 3 and 5 years is extremely small. But if all other things are equal, then it's worth having of course.

For what it's worth, we got the 5 year warranty on ours despite it being a price match on an Enduro mover. We also got it on the never never with Powrtouch at a very competitive rate (worked out cheaper than paying it by credit card) If I recall correctly it was just over £400 we paid about 2 years ago for the Model 3 with Powrbar to link the two sides together. There had been a lot of discussion here about the price match against the Enduro which was on ebay that someone had discovered Powrtouch were prepared to pricematch. I found one elsewhere on the internet for a few pounds cheaper with no mention on the website about delivery which powrtouch matched. I since contacted the company they were matching who turned out did add a delivery charge but it wasn't clear on the website. I think I managed to get the cheapest Powrtouch of anyone doing a self fit.

Whilst I have no reason to say anything negative about any of the others, the customer service from Powrtouch is legendary and if I were ever in the market for another mover I would be looking to Powrtouch and trying to get a pricematch ogainst the E-Go mover. Regardless of the length of warranty, the Powrtouch you get would be the same as the one you get if you paid full whack for it. In my case I got a better one. Had I bought a Powrtouch at full price I would have had the Model 1 as this was suitable for my van. As I was price matching an Enduro I got the Model 3 as this was the closest spec they had to the Enduro. Technically, still not a match though as despite the Enduro having a 3 year warranty, it has a max weight of 1800 kg. The Powrtouch model 3 has a max weight of 1500 kg. Something I would have challenged if they had tried to reduce the warranty cover.
