just sold our old van on ebay , buyer collecting saturday.very happy as we got £400 over our reserve price and a whopping £2400 more than a dealer offered us in part ex.Given that the new van was bought privately for £2k less than a dealer wanted as well its been a very very good deal for us...17

certainly reinforces my beliefs to avoid the dealers like the plague as you get a much better deal going private

Well done to you. I'm thinking about putting ours on ebay once we come back next week but i'm worried we'll get all sorts coming to look or time wasters.  We got a price from a dealer but seen same sorts on ebay & caravan trader for a lot more than we been offered so its got to be better to sell private. You get a better price & the buyer pays a better price too.

There should be a thing on here where you can link your caravan item number on ebay to here.  17

its the price you have to pay for getting a better deal im afraid.lose all the hassle of viewings/timewasters by part exchange but lose shed loads of hard earned dosh at the same time.

Not thinking of selling but if I did sell privately, how do you ensure that several thousand pounds or so will be paid?  Bouncing cheques, stolen building society checks and in a relative's case when selling a car for cash one afternoon, was burgled the next day and the police thought it would be the buyers trying to have the car and cash!

Times we live in!

Bank transfer Carol, they transfer the money into your account so there is no physical exchange of a cheque or bankers draft.

Alternatively you take them to your bank and they pay the cash in there and then.

When we bought our folding camper we put the money directly into the persons account and then collected it.  It is all a matter of trust on the buyers side as well, we were wondering if the camper would be there when we went to pick it up.  It was and all was well.

Talking of old vans our local dealer, Swindon caravan centre, had really old vans for sale for just a few hundred pounds.  So some dealers must sell them when getting them on part exchange.

We were given the account number, sort code and account name.  I took the money out of my account in cash and put it into their account cash.  That way it was instant.

We did that when we sold a car and it worked out ok.

Thanks all for suggestions.  Not being too trusting with large sums of  money and strangers, although I know that most people are honest, I favour the bank transfer idea.  I suppose there has to be trust on both sides even with that as they have to put the money in to your bank and wait for clearance to get the caravan concerned.

Cheers

Carol

good news! we did the same sold ours for twice as much on ebay. then bought a accident damaged caravan for the price of the one we sold and spent some extra money, time and skill!!  got my end bathroom now and brand new caravan, one drawback.. not been able to get away just yet!! will hopefully end of august. (2 months to do, mainly waiting for certain parts and only able to work on caravan at weekends only)
