We went on holiday last week with friends who have a caravan (we're still in a tent) and we were surprised to find that their awning had a groundsheet inside it.
Now, our friends are a bit of the paranoid type about insects getting into their van and awning but is a groundsheet normal? I always imagined it would be much nicer to have grass in the awning (assuming it's not muddy).
Most caravanners use a grass friendly groundsheet in their awning, we use the close woven type made by Kampa, no insects at all and after two weeks the grass looks OK.

We are looking to replace our breathable groundsheet witha new one, and I notice that they now also sell a breathable under lay for the groundsheet. Sounds OK, but with the combined thickness of the two layers of material, would it really still be breathable in the practical sense?
We avoid sites with hard standing because we like to have grass under our feet. I did mention this to the CC when I renewed my membership, they advised me that it was fine to put the van on the hard standing and pitch the porch awning on the grass alongside. I always feel that hard standing is like camping on Tesco car park.
I do accept that sometimes it is necessary on badly drained sites, or pitches were the last occupant didn't lift the ground sheet every day to let the grass
breath
We use a breathable groundsheet in our awning and the grass was fine when we left but we were lucky to have a decent pitch to start with as some were a mess with over use by tents with non breathable groundsheets. We had quite a bit of rain on site a couple of weeks back and some pitches were just mud due to over use and tents pitched straight over the last area so not much chance on nice grass underfoot.
The site also charged us for our groundsheet yet the tents that caused most damage get away with it.
ground sheet and carpet for us BOTT, but OH says you dont know if any animal has had a doo daa on the grass
------------- Think this year is to follow old meet friends for 2014.
If you cant do someone a good turn, don`t do them a bad one,its nice to be nice you know, and little things mean much more later in life.
Pete.
Grass for me, especially in the kitchen tent (over the tow bar mounted kitchen).
I'm not brill on my feet and I tend to spill stuff when cooking, so grass is much the safer option than a wet and slippery groundsheet.
The main trailer tent area is off the ground (it is a Combi Camp) so the grass is not affected at all. I have put a bit of vinyl down in the inner living area which wipes easily, and added a small rug for comfort in bare feet, and I keep my crocs down by the inner door so mud doesn't get walked in.
