pretty sure i am worrying about nowt here but when i came back after a 70 mile tow the tyre tread on my van was warm, the wheel and centre were stone cold so not coming from bearings or a rubbing brake. know on a car the tyres do get warm from the tractive effort and braking forces together with heat sink from the roads but was surprised to feel heat in the van tyres.

note i am involved in motorsport so know the benefits of having hot tyres for grip etc and how a treaded tyre will heat up on dry roads as there is no water to get into the grooves and cool them

tyre pressures were within 1psi of being spot on. chassis is bpw. assume normal

thing is that i dont usually put the clamp on as soon as i stop usually by the time i have pushed van onto drive etc it is 20 minutes later and tyres will have cooled

The main reason for lorry tyres blowing out is overheating, there is plenty of friction on the small tyres of vans and trailers to apply the same theory, call me obsessive but on a hot day and 300 mile journey i would be having cooling stops for me and the tyres ;)

Had new tyres fitted on van and first time out I could smell rubber when I walked past caravan at a stop, i felt tyres and one was quite a lot warmer than the other. I felt the wheel centres and both were quite cool, I did keep an eye on them (or should I say hand) and everthing seems fine. As for the strong rubber smell it's gradually faded as the miles gather.

Be very carefull here, check that you have tyres which are suitable for the weight of your caravan and not just car tyres.

Check pressure's

If the tyre is making heat it could be a sign that the tyre is breaking up.

If your tyres are old or have stood for a while please dont take any chances, changing them is cheaper than wrecking your van !

Ok that's the scary bit over, have you checked that your brakes are not sticking on slightly, the wheel would be very warn/hot if thats the case.

After some miles at speed there will be some heat in your tyres BUT they shouldnt be hot, hot.

Play safe change your rubber !

It's perfectly normal, don't worry.  As long as the pressures are right and the wheels themselves are not hot, there's no problem.
