a mate at work has just come back from his hols with his hobby van and he was telling us that he was pulled over by the police it seems the law is now that an 8 foot wide trailer is a comercial trailer so a 8 foot wide hobby can only be pulled by a comercial vehicle or if you hold a hgv licence or a showmans licence but even then the police wasnt to sure either does anyone know

I tow my van with a white van so am i also tarnished??

shame you failed to anser the question.

does a 4x4 (im presuming were talking about izuzu/shogun) drop in to a comercial sized vehicle.

and my white van isnt a comercial vehicle is actually a minibus that was converted from a comercial van

as for the police not knowing the law thats hardly suprizing really isit

what was the outcome of him being stopped, was he allowed to continue his journey and what will happen in the future??

Because to tow an oversized Hobby you must have a vehicle that weighs in excess of 3500 kg and very few ordinary tow vehicles fall into this category.

There is  a Hobby forum on the net, if you read it you will see that their attitude is, in the main, let them stop me and fine me and until then I will tow with my Pajero/Land Cruiser etc etc.  When asked about the implications for their insurance they are equally blase!

he was allowed to continue his journey as he are a haulage firm we are all hgv drivers and yes my isuzu is a comercial pick up but a shogun isnt and you must have the first 8ft wide elddis crussader ive come across the thing wasnt white vans it was wide trailers

Wrong.  They are insured.  Check with any insurance company.  If the vehicle is imported, it is a grey area as most as the gross payload is not listed.  As for it having to be a commercial vehicle, that is a load of tosh but it should be be capable of the magic 3501 kg.  My V5 does not show any of the maximum figures so legally I cna tow with my 4 x 4 and yes my insurance will cover me!  Can't say the same for some other drivers towing wide Hobbys.  The annoying part is that foreigners can legally tow their wide caravans with any suitable car and it does not have to conform to the 3501 kgs.

I'd like to see it challenged in court I really would.  I think then and only then will we see just how willing the insurers would be to pay out.  They may pay out if somebody is injured but the person using the car as a tow car pulling the Hobby may well find their car and van are not covered when it comes down to it.

Same as the A Frame debate, not been tested in court and a very grey area.

it is not tosh the 3500kg law is not applicable as any trailer over 7ft 6inch wide is a comercial trailer so do your homework

No it is a widely held belief that you can only tow these oversized caravans with a commercial vehicle over 3501 kg.  Apparently that is not the case, just that it must be a vehicle weighing more than 3501 kg.

Khanny please don't be quite so aggressive, we are just having a quiet debate here huh?!
