Hi all

I'm a bit of a caravan newbie so apologies if this is a stupid question but...

I have a 1991 Fleurette Tamaris 37ts pop top caravan, does anyone know what pressure the tyres should be?

The tyres are : 145/80 R 13 75 T

(I have the handbook which is helpfully in French! I was initially hopeful when on the back it has the title "pressions" (which google tells me is pressure) on the back for the 37ts as 2,500 kg but kg appears to be a measure of weight rather than tyre pressure)

Many thanks in advance

Great links thanks!

From the second chart, if the row you are referring to is:

145R13 Reinforced 78 935 42

that seems to be for a "Reinforced" tyre, my tyres do not have "reinforced" written on them, do this mean they are not reinforced?

Have a look here http://www.tyresafe.org/tyre-safety/ click on Caravan Tyres .
Look at the tyre pressure table it has your tyres on there .

The 75 T shows the loading and the max speed. 75 load rating is 387kg, giving an axle loading of 774kg. You should only load a caravan to about 90% of the maximum load rating, giving 697kg. If your pop-up has an all up weight greated than this, and I suspect it does as mine is 1000kg, then you need new tyres with a higher load rating.

Only after that, I'd worry about the tyre pressure! There is a simple formula to work it out exactly.

Thanks for the rerplies everyone that's really helpful.

In my manual it says:

Model : Tamaris 37TS
Tyre dimensions: 145 x 13
Pressure : 2,500 kg

(all translated from french using google :-))

So its possible that a previous owner of the caravan bought tyres that were not quite up to the job so what tyres should I get?

I have the tyre dimensions from the manual so the it would seem the 145 R 13 part is ok but what load rating should I look for? It doesn't seem to include this in the manual?

Does anyone have any idea what the :
"Pressure : 2,500 kg"
is referring to?

thanks again for your help everyone

Hi Brett

A load of 2500kg is huge, the tyres would be super heavy duty. I have had to replace mine this month due to a handbook problem, and I got Avon 8 plys, the strongest I could get. They have a load of 950kg each, still well below that figure of yours.

First look on your chassis on the A frame, mine's on the offside. It will give the maximum chassis load. To find which tyres you need, divide this max chassis load by 2 and add on about 10% as the safety factor. ie if you have a max chassis load of 1000kg, this gives a max load of 500kg per tyre (you ignore the weight on the towhitch) and add 10% safety factor, ie you need a max load of 550kg per tyre.

If you take this information and your tyre size to a decent tyre dealer, they should tell you what you need. A higher figure for the max tyre load is obviously good, but don't go below that.

Don't forget to check the spare this might be the correct rating if its not been used, though my tyres on a new van were below the 10% safety level.

Once you get new tyres, look at the max load rating of the tyres, and the max tyre pressure (it will be on the side of the tyre) then use the following formula:

max chassis load x max tyre pressure
  Correct pressure =     ________________________________
                                                2 x max tyre load

The 2500kg should be read  as 2.500KGf/cm3  which translates roughly to 2.5 atm (Atmospheres), where 1 atm is approx 15 Ib per square inch. Therefore max pressure is 37.5lb per sq in. Thats to say , its nowt to do with the max load that the tyre can carry but is the recommended maximum pressure. Bloomin French !!

Just stick with freeatlasts info--- go for 8 ply higher load carrying tyres and accept that they are dearer but better than cheap car tyres

First and while the calculation is useful it is NOT accurate, second the more over rated tyres you choose the more inaccurate it becomes.

The load index tells you what type tyre you have, yours at 75 are standard 'car' type tyres, there does not appear to be reinforced of the same size but next up are light commercial tyres, (6ply), at 83 these equal 974kg per pair maximum.

Your original tyres run at a maximum pressure of 35psi or 2.4bar, 2.5bar is the correct translation which translates to 36psi (albeit 1-2psi is neither here nor there)

The correct pressure for your tyres is what suits the actual weight of your trailer, or it's maximum weight, not though the maximum of the tyres.

So now you need to find out how much your trailer weighs? then you can pick an ideal pair of tyres and find the correct pressure for them.

Many thanks again everyone for your brilliant help, it is very much appreciated, hopefully I'll get to the bottom of it before we go on holiday on Saturday!

So how heavy is my caravan? I have looked at the plate on the A-frame and it says (with google translation):

Le Rapide
Type (Type)- 20231
PTR-GA - 850
poids verticalo maxi (Max vertical weight) - 100
numero d'homologat (Approval number) - 74036
numero seriel (Serial number) - 5c07883

they mean almost as much to me in english as french :-)

I *think* the max vertical weight might be the max nose weight?

But I cannot see an obvious "maximum chassis load" the closest likely looking number is 850 (from PTR-GA 850) but I have no idea what PTR-GA means (not even google helped me there)

any ideas anyone?
thanks again

I have just spoken to someone at :
http://www.campersandleisure.co.uk/
who was brilliant (they had a caravan similar to mine on sale) he said that the caravan would only weigh about 700 kg (perhaps they made them lighter in those days) so those tyres were actually ok and he'd fill them up to 36 psi

Again thanks very much for all of your help, have a "virtual" beer on me :-)
