Hi all, In the last year we have gone from a tent to a folding camper and now have an Esterel Folding Caravan. However, as you do we've been thinking if it wouldn't just be easier to get a caravan especially as we like quiet sites and the shower facility would be wonderful on some CSs! My question is which caravans would we be able to tow? We have a Skoda Octavia 4x4 1.9 TDi (weight specs below) I've been looking for somewhere we can put the car in and it will give us a list of caravans but it doesn't seem to exist! Also we would only be looking at an older model as we wouldn't have a great deal of money to spend (money if we sold the Esterel and maybe a couple of hundred) luckily there's no rush and for the time being we are happy with Ethelburt.

So which older 'vans could we tow and many many thanks for your help!

Dimensions
Wheelbase, mm 2578
Length, mm 4572
Width, mm 176
Height, mm 1468
Boot, litres 1620
Fuel Tank, litres 55
Kerb Weight, kg 1615
Gross Weight, kg 2120
Towing Limits, kg 1500

PS: Forgot to say at least a 4/5 berth!

Hi Andi,
Going from the specs you quote, I found this - if so, the BHP is 105. From the kerbweight, your recommended (85%) limit for a van would be approx 1370Kg.
I entered details for a Skoda with your specs and BHP, with a "standard caravan" of 1175Kg unladen/1375Kg fully loaded weights and got the following -

"The match between car and caravan is perfect in accordance with a mix of European standards. However, according to the British Towing Code the percentage (loaded caravan / kerbweight tow car) is 85%.

The towing performances of this Skoda with your Caravan are satisfactory (performance index = 85 km/h or 53 mph).

You may expect just moderate performances from this outfit. To come along - even on flat roads - you must floor the gas pedal and change gears regularly in which case top gear is applicable under favourable circumstances.

On motorway inclines you will be able to come along provided you've selected the right gear. On steep roads you have more than sufficient power to keep going. On hill starts there will be sufficient power to get going, provided the wheels have traction.

Possible top speeds:
Possible top speed in windless conditions and head wind force 3
Top speed in 3rd gear is 55 mph (89 km/h) and in head wind it will be 55 mph (89 km/h).
Top speed in 4th gear is 70 mph (112 km/h) and in head wind it will be 65 mph (104 km/h).
Top speed in 5th gear is 68 mph (110 km/h) and in head wind it will be 60 mph (96 km/h).
Top speed in 6th gear is 63 mph (101 km/h) and in headwind it will be 50 mph (80 km/h)."

... so I think you will need to concentrate on the lighter (older?) vans to remain in that weight range...
I have spoken to a couple of other Octavia (105) owners, and they were quite satisfied with how their cars handled - I have a Skoda Octavia, but mine is 140BHP and that is more than enough for my needs - I only have a 1000Kg van, and I have to constantly take care to not go over the limit...
Incidentally, my van is a 1995 Sprite Alpine 4 berth - if you look for Sprite Alpines or Musketeers, those might suit...

I think your trouble is that the car has a relatively low power output for a very heavy car, so adding a caravan weight will make it rather slow and underpowered.

However there are many light caravans about. Look at the Bailey Ranger range, they are also keenly priced but still well equipped and well built.

I've got a 99 Ranger 510/4. It has hot & cold water, blow air heating, oven etc, all you need. An end washroom with seperate shower cubicle, casette toilet and washbasin. A good big kitchen.

All weighs 1200kg MTPLM and 950kg unladen. Should be well within your limit. Probably worth £3000 or so.

Thanks! I knew we needed to look for a lightweight 'van we bought the Octavia more for the boot room (it is 105bhp) than speed or pulling power as we had a FC at the time and it didn't even notice it was there it has no problems with the Esterel either but both weigh/ed in at around 850-900.

The help with names of vans that we could tow is fantastic as a lot of the time people don't say what weight they are!

I think the Avondales are quite low in weight.  We have got the new Bailey Ranger and have just upgraded our Ford Galaxy because it either had an engine problem or just couldn't handle the extra weight.  The Galaxy had no problem with towing our old Avondale.

I may get corrected, but I seem to recall that Lunar caravans have been frequently recommended as lightweight vans....

We pull a lunar with our octavia 1.9 not 4x4 and have been all over Europe and no the car is not under powered in fact you hould get 35plus mpg with it towing. The car takes us everywhere we ask it no problems and it has done 125,000 miles been up in the Alps down to millau and most of Britian. In fact when we change it will be another Octavia a we cannot aford to run a 4 x 4 and go all over Europe.

HI,

I have the Adria Altea 542 DK which comes in at 1300kg fully loaded.  The van is good quality and the perfect layout for us.

Anyway.... happy hunting

for older vans - some of the ABI's. Admittedly mine is only a 2 berth, but its only 650kg unladen, and I tow it with exactly the same engine in a Seat Altea XL. They did do some 4/5 berths that I believe were less than 900kg unladen

Happy hunting!

Hi Andi  We tow with aSkoda Octavia 1.9 TDi.  Our Skoda hand book says we are able to tow 1400kgs, so if yours says 1500kgs you should be ok for lots of caravans. We tow an Ace Award Northstar which when fully loaded is very near to our 1400kgs, and our car tows great, even on steep gradients
