Hi all, In the last year we have gone from a tent to a folding camper and now have an Esterel Folding Caravan. However, as you do we've been thinking if it wouldn't just be easier to get a caravan especially as we like quiet sites and the shower facility would be wonderful on some CSs! My question is which caravans would we be able to tow? We have a Skoda Octavia 4x4 1.9 TDi (weight specs below) I've been looking for somewhere we can put the car in and it will give us a list of caravans but it doesn't seem to exist! Also we would only be looking at an older model as we wouldn't have a great deal of money to spend (money if we sold the Esterel and maybe a couple of hundred) luckily there's no rush and for the time being we are happy with Ethelburt.
So which older 'vans could we tow and many many thanks for your help!

Hi Andi,
Going from the specs you quote, I found this - if so, the BHP is 105. From the kerbweight, your recommended (85%) limit for a van would be approx 1370Kg.
I entered details for a Skoda with your specs and BHP, with a "standard caravan" of 1175Kg unladen/1375Kg fully loaded weights and got the following -
"The match between car and caravan is perfect in accordance with a mix of European standards. However, according to the British Towing Code the percentage (loaded caravan / kerbweight tow car) is 85%.
The towing performances of this Skoda with your Caravan are satisfactory (performance index = 85 km/h or 53 mph).
You may expect just moderate performances from this outfit. To come along - even on flat roads - you must floor the gas pedal and change gears regularly in which case top gear is applicable under favourable circumstances.
On motorway inclines you will be able to come along provided you've selected the right gear. On steep roads you have more than sufficient power to keep going. On hill starts there will be sufficient power to get going, provided the wheels have traction.
Possible top speeds:
Possible top speed in windless conditions and head wind force 3
Top speed in 3rd gear is 55 mph (89 km/h) and in head wind it will be 55 mph (89 km/h).
Top speed in 4th gear is 70 mph (112 km/h) and in head wind it will be 65 mph (104 km/h).
Top speed in 5th gear is 68 mph (110 km/h) and in head wind it will be 60 mph (96 km/h).
Top speed in 6th gear is 63 mph (101 km/h) and in headwind it will be 50 mph (80 km/h)."
... so I think you will need to concentrate on the lighter (older?) vans to remain in that weight range...
I have spoken to a couple of other Octavia (105) owners, and they were quite satisfied with how their cars handled - I have a Skoda Octavia, but mine is 140BHP and that is more than enough for my needs - I only have a 1000Kg van, and I have to constantly take care to not go over the limit...
Incidentally, my van is a 1995 Sprite Alpine 4 berth - if you look for Sprite Alpines or Musketeers, those might suit...
