Gas is very efficient for refrigeration but as you say, you want electric.
The only thing left, that can stop working is the compressor, due to a heat issue. I would imagine that since a store has had it in and working for 5 days, then the issue is the thermal cut-out, which is in turn due to heat not being able to be removed from around the fridge where it is situated in the van. Gas is not so bad, since it relies on heat to evaporate the internal gas, which in turn cools the fridge, however the electric motor of the condenser will suffer if it gets over-heated and it will cut out.
An easy test is to remove the fridge from where it is sited and run it, if it cuts out, then it is the thermal cut-out that is at fault, if it carries on running, it is the ventilation in situ.
