This question is based on knowing what you are doing, and I think Gary or Wizard may be the best people to answer it.

I use the BP Gaslight propane cylinders,which are not obtainable in France, and our caravan has an onboard regulator.  This regulator has an isolating tap which is after the regulator.

Now, if we were in France and the BP cylinder ran dry, with the onboard regulator tap turned OFF, would it be considered safe practice to make up a pigtail with a regulator to suit an obtainable cylinder, and the other end having the adaptor to connect to the caravan's external gas point?      Bearing in mind that, after the regulator, the external point is just a part of the gaspipe system and, on our van, the first branch in the pipework after the onboard regulator.

AL, one problem with my pigtail already fitted to the onboard regulator is that it is located high up under the bulkhead.  Being extremely difficult to get at, and being able to avoid disturbing the existing gas tight seals in the fittings, I thought this could be an easy way to get a temporary supply; always providing that safety is not compromised.

How long are you going for? We find a 6kgs Calor Lite lasts for about 50 nights when just used for cooking. Do you take 2 cylinders?

Did you know that some of the Gaslow easy fit propane hoses with the red screw ring fitting are actually a butane hose with the propane hand screw fitting on the end. If you take a normal gas spanner, and a smaller spanner you can easily convert this propane hose to butane and then use a Camping Gas cylinder. This would avoid the problem you have described.

David, we go for 7 to 8 weeks.  We normally take 2 x 10 kg BP Gaslight bottles.  We did not go onto the second bottle last.  However (7 weeks last time), at our two main stops we managed to get onto 16 amp pitches.  Had we not been that fortunate, I think we would have used considerably more gas.  We do use our Cadac very frequently, and also we always use only our own ablution facilities, which means gas water heating when on 6 amp EHU.

My thinking was to cut down to one 10 kg bottle, with an easy get-out if the Gaslight bottle ran dry.
