There is really no need.

Setting any illegality issues aside, once you get into the groove of travelling at 55 to 60 it really makes such a pleasant journey when towing.

It`s because they think they are clever, I think they are stupid and have no concern for other drivers/towers safety

I think to be fair, a lot of them are just plain ignorant.
There has been an increase in new-to-towing holiday makers in recent years and you just have to check some of the questions on the caravan forums (not just this one), to appreciate there's clearly a lot of naivety in towing. Fair, some folk ask the questions, but there's a lot of others who don't bother and are blissfully unaware of restrictions when towing; like my wifes friend whose just bought a new van (new to towing) and asked us if it was normal for the van to "...flick about when doing 80mph".

You are never going to solve this in the UK while anybody can just buy a caravan, attach it to their car & go.

We have no caravan driving tests which might include a theory test on correct weight distribution & vehicle matching, no system of DVLA caravan registration & MOT tests.

While this exists we have to accept that thick, ignorant caravanners will continue to fail to understand that caravans are actually vehicles at all & will continue to exceed the towing speed limit(that presumabley they have no knowledge of)in badly maintained caravans.

there might be no driving test for towing a caravan but it's still illegal to drive over 70 while driving solo

You wouldn't know it Robin54, I was overtaken by everybody including a caravan yesterday on the M5 whilst doing 70 in the inside lane, just plodding along quietly - solo that is.

The caravan was nowhere to be seen then it just came up behind me like a rocket and whizzed past, he had his family onboard of course, I mean if you are gonna kill yerself you might as well take everybody with you and risk all your lives together.

It will never change, the whole attitude to driving in this country is wrong.

I actually enjoy towing within the legal limits.

Although I obviously have to pay more attention with a lump on the back, I seem to get in the groove as it were, and see much more of life around me. And yes, that includes the irresponsible brigade!

I agree, you get there just as quick, a lot less stressed and have saved enough petrol money to buy a meal out when you get there.

You do have to pass a test in order to tow. It is called the driving test. Speed limits for towing are in the highway code the same as they are for driving solo and should be tested as well as any other. The bigger question is why is the theory test too easy?

It is all too common for people to ask questions about the law that are covered by the highway code.

Why does the theory test have a pass rate of under 100%?

If a surgeon lost 10% of his patients because he didn't know what he was supposed to do he would end up in prison.

What's more there are a lot of us on the road who didn't even take a theory test because we passed our tests before they existed (not due to finding some loophole)

And with more and more vehicles on the roads driven by eastern European drivers the trend will only get worse: We have a far better testing regime than much of Europe.

I know someone who went to Poland to take his driving test because they pass you for not crashing very much on your test.

For the sake of caravanning I would not want to see an additional test for towing. I would rather see a more substantial driving test. Do you think the sort of driver who does 85 with a caravan on the back is keeping below 70 when solo..? Me neither. This sort of driver should not be driving at all.

There is one word for those reckless people and its W ankers......

I would not say I am the best driver when is comes to sticking to the speed limits when solo, however when I have the van on the back I sit happily at 57mph. I find its nice and stress free. Stay at the same speed as the wagons and there is no need to overtake them or get overtaken by them

Even the wife has commented on how relaxed I am when the caravan is on the back :)

Well this is not really the place for that sort of language and much of the time it is untrue.

Most incidents like this can be put down to individuals not knowing any better. If the tow car had been a Peugeot 206 or a Renault Clio with the suspension dropped so low you couldn't get a cigarette paper under neath it then you might have had a point, but much of the time it is down to people not even realising that there are many different forces acting on the outfit when towing than there are when driving solo.

If we are honest, I think most people would have to confess to having exceeded 70 mph when solo on the motorway at some point. The 70 mph limit was not introduced on the motorway because they were unsafe at speeds above this and there has even been talk of increasing it to 80 mph.

I would have been an advocate of increasing the limit to 80 for solo, but not to increase it for towing. However that introduces the effect of speed difference which is more dangerous than speed so if it is not safe to increase the limit for one then it is not safe to increase it at all.

As I have mentioned. The biggest problem is that if someone deems to to be safe to travel at 75 mph solo, then the tower who nows no better will often assume it is legal to tow at 70 and therefore it is safe to go at 75. The reason for this is that they do not know their highway code.

The highway code should be the drivers bible. Can anyone think of one good reason not to retake the theory test every few years? The highway code does get changed occasionally. How many of us actually have a copy of the most recent addition?

I too was on the M5 yesterday & was disgusted by the amount of hickdeads using the outside lane whilst overtaking cars in the  middle lane doing 70+ & i was doing between 50 & 60 as i wanted to get home in one piece

passing a test makes not a jot of difference to how you are going to drive thereafter.

people will pass a caravan test then think they are gods gift and still drive at 70 + regardless.

some people just dont care and you can never compensate for that mentality

I agree to some extent, but in a lot of cases, people just don't know any better. Moaning here is certainly not going to do anything about it.
